@adityam2000 @aribindi Respectfully, caring and doing nothing is functionally the same as not caring. The system degrades either way. It doesn’t help when people point to the 48-hour week as the problem, when we all know that number is fiction.

The NHS system for training surgeons is absolutely insane...
In the US, it would be 17 years from high school to independent practice as an orthopedic surgeon, with 1000+ cases done during residency.

@adityam2000 @aribindi Ortho trainees in London aren't working 48 hours. They're working closer to 70. Unpaid overtime, unpaid admin, and for what? Service always comes first. Training volume is low, morale is lower, and nobody seems to care.

@aribindi Yes it’s long, a lot of time wasted but also uk residents work 48 hour weeks (full time). Approximately 80% of residents in my speciality work less than full time. A lot of operating is missed. The only way this can change is reduce trainee numbers and increase work hours

@ElshadKarbasi My grandfather was a GP and emigrated to Australia in 1966 with his young family. He couldn't see a future as a doctor in the UK. I'll CCT 60 years later and am facing the exact same decision.
