My firsthand encounter with Scott Pelley: Ambushing a bloodied tornado victim for an ‘exclusive’
I tell this story every time someone mentions Scott Pelley:
I used to work for the Dallas Times Herald when he was rising at WFAA.
A tornado hit a Dallas suburb. I was sent to cover the main trauma hospital as ambulances brought in the injured and deceased.
Pelley and his cameraman were there. Once again, his behavior left me ashamed for the profession.
He slipped past the police line that had been set up to protect victims and families. While the rest of us waited for official briefings from the PIOs, someone spotted Pelley hiding in the bushes near the ER ambulance doors.
As medical staff wheeled in a blood-covered patient, he jumped out with his cameraman, shoved a mic in the victim’s face, and started firing questions.
Police immediately intervened, removed him from the property, and told him to leave.
That night his report ran as a “Scott Pelley WFAA Exclusive.”
How he obtained that video was never explained.
Several of us print reporters wanted to raise his conduct with the local SPJ chapter, but we were told to stand down — WFAA was our sister station.
Decades later, the pattern continued at 60 Minutes.
I truly hope Bari Weiss and others succeed in clearing out the ideological echo chamber and replacing it with genuine truth-seekers.
Only then can the profession begin restoring its credibility with the public.
I’m not holding my breath, but it’s long overdue.
