Grew up in poverty after his father died. Built himself back up. Became an MP in 1867. Merchant sailors were dying at 4x the rate of coal miners 💀 The ships were called coffin ships. Rotten. Overloaded. Heavily insured. Worth more to their owners SUNK than afloat 🚢 He published a book naming the owners by name. They sued him for libel. He won ✅ Parliament dropped his bill anyway. Nine years of campaigning. So he stood up in the House of Commons and called his fellow MPs VILLAINS 🤬 Shook his fist in the Speaker's face. The Merchant Shipping Act passed. By 1930 his load line was law in 54 countries. Today it sits on every merchant ship on earth 🌍 And the rubber-soled shoes every British child has worn in PE? The line where the sole meets the canvas. @FaringForwards Exactly! Your scenario or any other permutations of that! The US NEVER want to have to deal with any other inept UK Government again. They just want full control of The Chagos Islands. They'll get it by approving the stupid deal for five minutes and then annexing it or...?

It was always a stretch to imagine the US saving us. If I was them I’d think: this goon Starmer could give Chagos away to anyone on some fantasy principle. But we can bribe or bully Mauritius at will and if necessary seize the place in a way we can’t while it belongs to the Brits

The ideal outcome would be for the UK not to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands, but it was the best deal on the table for successive UK governments. @POTUS @realDonaldTrump and I respect this view, particularly in its guarantees of our profound, long-term security imperatives to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region. As the President emphasized, the U.S. retains the right to maintain and to reinforce our security interests on Diego Garcia if needed in the future.

@ColinBrazierTV He's calm, concise, direct with his facts and message. Almost chillingly so. I know he's doing a great job for Reform but even I can't make him out yet. Why don't we know anything else about him? Just things like is he married, has he got any children, normal things?

On #bbcqt last night Zia Yusuf faced numerous - absurd - attempts by Fiona Bruce, the audience & fellow panellists to divert away from Labour’s Mandelson disgrace by smearing Reform. He dealt with them brilliantly, even - shock horror - getting applause. The attacks failed.

@NileGardiner I think Rubio/Trump just want to get the UK out of the picture altogether as we're so unreliable. If they approve the rubbish deal the US can swiftly claim outside influence and annexe the entire region for themselves. Properly securing it forever.

Spoke to a number of extremely highly placed sources in the US govt community *Starmer absolutely begged Trump for approval for the Chagos deal - it sounds like the process was utterly humiliating for the UK, led by a begging Powell. In the end they didn’t get approval but a heavily caveated post on Truth Social *An issue still causing concern to US policymakers at the highest level is that the Chagos deal is backed by China, and it’s thought Starmer’s true motive for securing the Chagos deal is that it will make it easier for him to get a big trade deal with China. POTUS is utterly against that, and officials believe it will turn him even more fully against the deal *Every American I spoke to pointed out POTUS has left the situation open and caveated, and that the statement was not an endorsement of Starmer The mainstream UK media is not picking up on these subtleties which tells me it’s true

@TiceRichard There is no deal. Honestly Richard, actually read the statement. There are so many caveats and permutations that end with the US having full unfettered control of Diego Garcia and its surrounding islands if their operations are interfered with. It is Trump stealth diplomacy.

The islands are British now and Diego Garcia is shared with the USA. This deal means the U.K. is PAYING Mauritius to take over the islands and with its close relationship to China there is a security risk outlined by many senior Defence experts both American and British. Keir Starmer is just wrong and you sadly are being misled. Please think again as you were so right when you said that the plan was stupid and it is.
