Bruno Fernandes has been United’s most impactful player since his arrival. In the midst of transfer dopamine, let's reflect and appreciate what he's done. We will explore three metrics, Att. Threat, Poss. Influence and Def. Work rate as components of Team performance - Thread🧵

@Poetic_Fella @aziztactics Timing and distances matter too They did try that, they did have the overload with the WB and the winger out wide The problem is a lobbed pass spends time in the air and City won't remain static While the ball is travelling City, CB, DM and winger will move to balance numbers

Peps 4-2-4 press won't work against all teams But he doesn't intend for it to Part of the genius is him understanding that it WOULD work against THIS opposition It wasn't without risk His backline was in 1v1s and his midfield was almost bare But the execution minimized it
Football Observer@FOBSVR

@aziztactics Peps plan was executed almost perfectly with almost no room for solutions They wanted Arsenal to go long so they increased the gap between the front and back of their defence to make the distance too long And while the ball was traveling they pounced x.com/FOBSVR/status/…

@RedDevil766364 @Hosang Exactly, it's obviously a quality disparity We shouldn't expect more from their biased logic That's why I resort to asking them questions that will result in the full truth coming out

@FOBSVR @Hosang Unusually high utilisation is Bruno’s ‘’flaw’’, rather than a result of him being disproportionately better than his team mates. If you ask WHY his utilisation is high, they call you a ‘’fanboy’’ 😂 Incapable of assessing his strengths (and flaws) reasonably with any nuance.

Ricky explaining an extremely well understood, 10-15 year old, sports science principle, in plain English so even beginners can understand and the rest of the studio can’t comprehend it… It’s called “utilisation” or “usage”.

@RedDevil766364 @Hosang Bingo 🙏🏾 1. They'll never explain HOW high utilisation is BRUNO'S fault 2. This season proved it In the 20 games under Amorim, Bruno touches in the final 1/3 were < Amad, Cunha and Mbuemo Not one created as much as he did Bruno doesnt need to do less They need to do more

@Hosang You’ve spent months/ years decrying the quality of this squad, but now all Bruno apparently needed to do was stop trying to create & score and give more of the ball to low quality players 😂 Mental gymnastics.

@UtdSteve_ @exfootballfan Top clubs have multiple strong goalkeepers You saw what happened when we players Bayindr and Onana Rare but a GK can get injured when that happens what'll happen then?

@pranav_m28 Very interesting Would be interested to see where each player received the passes final 3rd, middle 3rd etc. This data would be heavily influenced by his time playing in the pivot , mostly passes to WBs and fellow DMs

What do Man United players do after receiving a pass from Bruno Fernandes? -Casemiro makes the most successful progressive passes after receiving a pass from Bruno. Followed by Luke Shaw and Amad. -Amad also attempts a lot of dribbles after receiving a pass from Bruno but has a very low completion rate (2/12). -Amad and Mbeumo have taken the most shots followed Cunha. -Cunah with the most take-ons completed. *This is the first example of what I am planning with this, visuals wise. Working on a meaningful action map + hoping to add some more meaningful columns to this table if possible. Give your suggestions below.

Random q for ppl who make bespoke stats has anyone done anything related to average success of an action preceded by a pass from a specific player? E.g. how successful is the next pass, dribble, shot of United player immediately after receiving the ball from Bruno vs their avg?

@AFCYop_ 1. That proposed pass from Kepa isn't as easy as it looks There'll be players out of frame waiting to pounce on him while the ball is travelling 2. The entire game plan was to bait the press and go long that's not on Kepa alone That's why Arteta left Havertz and Gyokeres high

Reasons why we lost this game : —Kepa (bait and beat the press) —We couldn’t win second balls (our midfielders job)

@FOBSVR Good point, thats when maybe a CM ( Rice/Zubimendi) can drop in front and carry the ball to bait the press & find a forward pass (solution 2)

The front 4 press isn’t new - and the solutions don’t have to be complex. 5 from Helberg’s Boro vs Stoke: – One CM drops, one behind the press – CBs close → quicker circulation – FBs narrow, offensive side → back-foot receive – Play through to go wide – CBs stepping in Solutions come as much from players as coaches -tailored to profiles, opposition and game context.

@Hosang @DareDamilareanu @FOBSVR ... & from that then show your conclusion. But it still requires showing the pros & cons & the full picture, even if that means you don't want Carrick. Like I said that what I have to do If you just focus on 1 side in analysis then that falls more towards standard fan opinion

@Hosang @JK_316 @DareDamilareanu Emotion is human but is one of the root causes of bias Consistently downplaying Amorims weaknesses and doing the reverse for Carrick is fundamentally biased Your feelings about Amorim should never have impacted how Carrick is assessed The other side bias has emotions as well

You have an issue with orientation. Look at things from my perspective. I thought we were a couple of pieces away from winning a league with Amorim’s style of football, pressing, overloads, high line etc after years and years of the game model being fundamentally non-elite and United hovering between 4th-6th (and lower under ETH). Then Amorim gets sacked and we bring in an interim with no proven CV of success, who is replicating the same “results over game model” attitude I’ve seen multiple times before (Jose to ETH), and when he tries to implement modern, elite theory (like high press), the opposition walks through us (like ETH)… So from my perspective, would you be happy? Why do I have to give “balance”? I think I am being balanced. Results are amazing, but he can’t be given the job based on performances.
