Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Maria Cecilia Rosa was tragically murdered during an attempted robbery in Long Beach in the early morning hours of March 28, 2006. While heading to work at the Inmate Reception Center in downtown Los Angeles, she was confronted by two suspects seeking to fund their drug habit. When Deputy Rosa identified herself by displaying her badge, a struggle ensued, and she was shot twice in the torso with a .22 caliber handgun. Her body was later discovered by newspaper delivery workers. An intense manhunt was launched for Deputy Rosa’s killers. In late September 2006, they were arrested. A year-and-a-half later, after already convicting both men of Deputy Rosa’s murder, the jury issued a death sentenced to the man who shot her. The second suspect received 29-year to life in prison. Deputy Rosa, 30, known affectionately as “Cessy” to her friends, was a native of Sonora, Mexico. She graduated from high school in Gilroy, CA and joined the Sheriff's Department in 2000. She was survived by three brothers and two sisters. In 2009 a section of the 710 Freeway between Wardlow Road to the Pacific Coast Highway in the City of Long Beach was dedicated in her honor as the "Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Maria Cecilia Rosa Memorial Highway."

Flower stands are coming back to sidewalks in San Francisco! Today, I signed legislation to revitalize our city’s flower stand permit program, allowing for more small businesses to operate and deliver flowers from traditional stands Downtown to the Castro. For years, 120 flower stands lined our streets. But now, only four stands remain. Making it easier for these businesses to get permits and operate in our city is part of our PermitSF efforts and just one more step toward a thriving downtown. Thank you to my cosponsors @DannySauter, @mattdorsey, @RafaelMandelman, and Chyanne Chen for your support in making this happen. I can’t wait to see our streets with these iconic flower stands again.
