Today is a day of great celebration. On 6 April 1652, Jan van Riebeeck arrived at the Cape and a new people was born. The captain of the Drommedaris first saw Table Bay at 14:30 on 5 April 1652. This ship was one of the three ships with which Commandant Jan van Riebeeck landed in Table Bay on 6 April 1652 to establish a refreshment post for the VOC. The other two ships were De Goede Hoop and De Reijger, which joined the Drommedaris on the Cape coast at 04:00 the next morning. Happy Founders’ Day!

🇿🇦 South African President Cyril Ramaphosa says that the country will not abandon its DEI policies, known as “Black Economic Empowerment (BEE).” “Those who say BEE and affirmative action must stop are just dreaming,” he said. South Africa has strict laws that mandate race-based hiring practices. A new law called the Employment Equity Amendment Act sets hiring targets for 2025–2030 across 18 economic sectors. Some workforce targets aim for 90–96% of employees to come from designated groups, which include Black people, women, and people with disabilities (minimum 3%). That means that if a company has more than 5% white men, it could face penalties of up to 10% of its income.

In South Africa, at about the same time, one Province was completing 80 KM of its High Speed network - just in time for the 2010 World Cup. The only one in the country.
The system is great, if you can afford it, but not a single extra kilometre has been added since even though plans to expand are announced annually.
Related; the Head of State who had lost a party conference resigned on 21 September 2008. His successor signed the Bill that killed the country’s elite corruption-busting entity.
A latter successor came into Office and, in his second term, the current Head of State joined his administration as his Deputy. Around 2014/15, the government began instituting austerity (ie; defunding the State).
The Deputy would go on to prevail in their party’s 2017 conference and takeover government in February 2018. Yesterday, he appeared to double down on what looks a lot like privatisation of (freight) rail and water services & infrastructure.
On the plus side, the National Airline is recovering, though, so there’s also that…

I was shocked to know that China has around 50,000 km of this HSR network and it only started building this in 2008. On directly competitive routes, Chinese HSR has led to a 24.6% reduction in flights and a 28.2% decrease in air passenger volume.

I notice some are calling for the DA to focus on winning the support of black South Africans, and others are calling for the DA to focus on winning the support of Afrikaners. But the DA must be the party for all South Africans, because every South African is of equal worth, and because no one will succeed unless everyone has a place and a future in our country. That has always been the position of the DA and, given what every candidate for leadership is saying, it remains the position of the DA.

I have been following Dr/Prof Anele Mngadi Hammond’s story, and like many others, I was moved by it. Naturally, I wanted to help amplify it in the best way I know how: with care, facts, and the kind of writing that can hold both public attention and institutional scrutiny. But I have run into difficulty. Since Sunday, I have tried the contact number and email address provided on her socials and website, and I have not been able to reach her. That matters, because before I tell a story this serious properly, I believe one must do the work: speak to the person directly, review the documents, verify the legal trail, and understand the record in full. My understanding, based on what has been repeated online, is that she won the case. Yet I have not been able to find a publicly traceable court judgment confirming that outcome on the public legal record. At present, the references publicly cited on the Hammond website appear to be SAPS case numbers, which are police docket references, not court judgment citations. In trying to follow the legal trail, the only publicly traceable SAFLII judgment I have come across so far relating to Anele Hammond is Gore N.O. and Another v Hammond N.O. and Another, and that matter concerns the Hammond and Hammond Trust, not Standard Bank. In that case, the trust was first placed under provisional sequestration and later under final sequestration after the court accepted a liquidated claim of R3,780,347.58 linked to Bitou Municipality payments that had been paid into the trust’s account, with no proof that the trust had paid those funds over to Ukhana Projects CC. It is also worth noting that, according to The Citizen, Standard Bank says it is unaware of any criminal charges relating to this matter, has not been approached by law enforcement, and has not appeared in court on fraud or assault charges connected to these allegations. Given how many times ntate Sim Tshabalala’s name has been mentioned in these deeply troubling allegations, I believe the blue bank owes the public a full statement. Talk to us, bathong. Ra le kopa. Given the gravity of the allegations, I would genuinely like to understand whether those emails were received, who saw them, and what response, if any, was given. It would be deeply concerning if allegations of this magnitude were ignored. If anyone has credible information, direct contact with Dr/Prof Anele Mngadi Hammond, or access to the actual court record, judgment, order, or case number behind the outcome being referenced online, please assist. It is my understanding that Dr/Prof Anele Hammond is doing this not only for herself, but to help other disadvantaged clients who may also have suffered at the hands of Standard Bank. And after watching today’s updates (👇🏾) about her stated commitment to better education and justice for vulnerable South Africans, I was moved by the idea of supporting that mission. I am currently on the website and I noticed that the donation options appear to begin at US$1,000.
