@Prof_Nishith_P I've forgotten the author, but the novel "Moo" (from about 20 years ago) was pretty good. Set, as I recall, in a state school in a state beginning with the letter "m." So, it was "MU" which the students pronounced "Moo."

Apart from Netflix’s “The Chair”, are there good books that capture the drama of academia — politics, egos, hiring, tenure, all of it? Would love recommendations.

@GHHilliard @NormOrnstein Same here. But last time, one of the words was "river," and on the wall in front of me was a picture of a body of water. So, I used that to cue me on one of the words.

@NormOrnstein I get that with my Medicare checkup every year, but it’s only three words. Even so, the past two years, I’ve forgotten the third word.

Last year, while visiting my son in LA, I got an ear infection. Went to the MinuteClinic. The nurse practitioner said to me, "I am going to give you five words, and will ask you after I ask questions if you can remember them." 1

@slowppoke @John_Attridge I read the first three novels twice each and decided, “Okay. I now must accept that this is beyond me.”

@John_Attridge I knew one friend who had read some Proust. I read Swann's Way but could not be bothered to finish the other 6 books.

If you recognise phrases like "the Vinteuil sonata" or "the little clan" or "Baron de Charlus", you are living in a tiny bubble. Most people are completely unable to decipher allusions to Proust. This is why liberal elites are so out of touch

@AidanBricks @PAHoyeck I might have forgotten the exact quote, but Rorty wrote something like, "Habermas is a liberal who refuses to be a criticalist. Foucault is a criticalist who refuses to be a liberal."

@paulogia0 I remember an NPR story (years ago. Don't quote me) on how that test was actually carried out, and it revealed that the shroud most likely was from sometime in the Middle Ages.

If the Shroud of Turin really is Jesus’ burial cloth, why not sacrifice an inch for transparent carbon dating? What kind of faith values preserving fabric over winning souls?

@ScholarshipfPhd Once, as an editor of a small in-house journal, I read for hours to demonstrate that the authors' citation wouldn't hold up under scrutiny. THAT FELT GOOD!!!!!

Research is like 70% just reading for hours so you can add a citation to a sentence.

Here is what’s really going on with regard to the funding stalemate in Congress. ICE agents shot and killed two U.S. citizens on the streets of Minneapolis. Democrats then said: before we write you another check, agree to the same rules every police department in America already follows. Judicial warrants before entering homes. Visible ID. Body cameras. No raids at schools and hospitals. We immediately pushed for votes to fund TSA, the Coast Guard, and FEMA. Republicans blocked it. We tried to fund FEMA alone. Republicans blocked that too. Their position was to fund ICE with no strings attached, or shut the whole thing down. So DHS shut down. Then yesterday, the White House sent a letter admitting we were right. But they still won’t agree to judicial warrants or to take the masks off, which means agents can still break down your door without a judge’s approval and you still can’t see their faces when they do it. We’ve been ready to fund your airport security since day one, not to mention Coast Guard, FEMA and the rest. Republicans chose to protect ICE from accountability instead. #FundDHSFreezeICE

@JackieSeidel1 I felt that way when someone compared two women Reps who were squabbling to “middle-school girls.” I’ve taught middle-school girls, most of whom didn’t act anything like that.

As an advocate for children and young people, I am urging everyone to stop comparing adults including world "leaders" to children, toddlers, etc. They are not behaving like "children". They are behaving like the dysregulated, narcissistic, cruel, manipulative abusers they are. 1/

@ass_deans A new dean urged us to focus on research in our faculty hiring. We responded, "Every time we interview a promising researcher, some other university offers him $20K more than we do." His answer, "Then, we have to pay more." So, we faculty got right to work on that.
