Well that's exactly the problem. It WONT be a better City because raising taxes doesn't accomplish this. More effective and smarter City government spending does. These morons just spend more and continue to spend it inefficiently. To say nothing of the massive fraud, pork projects etc.

@SchmittNYC Someone who’s buying a $5.9 MILLION apartment in Manhattan as a pied-à-terre will be JUST FINE. And the city they get in exchange will be a better city than if they didn’t chip in a bit more.

Here’s a 5.9M condo in Manhattan. It’ll be bought by someone Mamdani/Hochul claim isn’t paying their “fair share”. They’ll pay a $132,000 mansion tax at closing. And then pay $5200 a month in property taxes. Mamdani and Hochul will now add another tax to this bill.

Non-resident property owners ALREADY pay a higher property tax than residents as they can't claim the STAR exemption. You have no idea what a bad policy this will be. NYC will LOSE revenue as these non-residents will sell their properties, buy elsewhere and spend their money in another State.

If someone wants to buy a $5M apartment and leave it empty, that’s their property, their choice—not yours to prey on because you need more revenue for failing socialist experiments. You’re not funding “free” child care. You’re laundering millions through the same bloated bureaucracy that’s already driven businesses, residents, and investment out of NYC. New York’s multi-billion deficit was caused by decades of reckless spending. Every time you “tax the rich,” capital flees, property values drop, construction halts, jobs vanish, and the tax base shrinks. We’ve seen it in city after city. The ultra-wealthy don’t stay and pay—they leave. The middle class gets stuck with the bill. The empty luxury units you hate will stay empty longer because you made ownership toxic. This “progressive” tax is proof that socialists like you view citizens as ATMs, not free individuals. Keep this up and watch the last productive people and dollars flee faster than you can tweet “equity.” #TaxationIsTheft

Non-residents who spend millions of dollars on NYC apartments help drive NYC’s economy. Most of the profit in condominium development is in the penthouses. The Ken Griffins of the world make NYC high end development viable, driving high-paying construction, brokerage, legal, marketing, and other jobs in NYC. We should be applauding Ken for spending $238 million in NYC, not attacking him for doing so. Importantly, non-resident owners of NYC apartments who leave their apartments vacant for much of the year are not a burden to NYC schools, services, or other resources while they drive growth in retail sales, restaurants, theater, and other important drivers of our economy. They also often support NYC non-profits with donations. Ken’s company is a major employer in NYC of very high paying jobs which drive a considerable amount of our tax base. We wouldn’t want him to move even more employees to Miami. These non-resident owners also already pay a lot of taxes including mansion taxes, real estate taxes, sales taxes and more. While @NYCMayor Mamdani likes the tag line ‘Tax the rich.’ Unfortunately, his policies will harm the constituencies he is supposedly trying to help. I can’t imagine the NYC construction unions are excited about his plan.

65% of Haitian non-citizen households are on welfare. They are draining our resources, making America weaker and poorer. It is absolutely idiotic to give them backdoor amnesty by extending TPS.
