To give some idea of what the old penitential books prescribed (they varied some), I'll give a penance for a common sin among men.
5-10 days of fasting on bread and water for one instance of self-abuse.
The penance was higher if it was habitual.
It gets more interesting when you look at bishops, who could receive 5 years of penance for one lie.

I always love when some doofus pulls the “well formed conscience” thing about why they disagree with Church teaching. You don’t have a well formed conscience then, well formed conscience is about the exceptions the Church hasn’t made teachings on yet.
