Australia wants a multilateral system that helps avert conflict, upholds international rules and norms and effectively tackles global issues. @HelgaMSchmid is a champion of that system. We discussed the challenges facing the world and the role the UN can play.

As we celebrate the New Year and look to the 80th anniversary of the founding of the @UN , I call on all citizens of the world to come together in the spirit of ‘unity in diversity’, recognizing that our differences should not be a source of division but of strength. During the current year 2024, we have achieved remarkable things and overcome immense obstacles. In the forthcoming year 2025, let us seize the opportunity to reflect on our accomplishments and chart a path forward that allows us to advance together, even further, even faster, towards universal well-being. Honoured to speak to an elated @HindKabawat , a member of the Syrian opposition that has worked to keep civil society alive through the darkness of Assad. She said "today we celebrate but tomorrow we roll up our sleeves to form a new inclusive Syria. It is the first day of our lives in freedom, and there are three messages 'no revenge, no punishment and no sectarianism' ".
