The ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz is deeply damaging. Getting global shipping moving is vital to ease cost of living pressures. The UK has convened more than 40 nations who share our aim to restore freedom of navigation. This week the UK and France will co-host a summit to advance work on a coordinated, independent, multinational plan to safeguard international shipping when the conflict ends.

I am genuinely struggling to understand this logic. If the rest of the world is willing to pay a small toll to Iran to keep oil flowing and stabilise markets, then why does the U.S. feel the need to block all shipping, especially when it is not dependent on that oil?

I honestly thought this map was made up Hundreds of supertankers, the kind that carry two million barrels each, are currently racing toward the US Gulf Coast from every direction. Atlantic, Indian Ocean, around Africa, the scenic route, the "we were heading to Saudi Arabia but NVM" route. Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz and everyone panicked. Oil hit $126 a barrel. Gas hit $4 a gallon. Cable news did the thing where they put a red banner on screen and say "CRISIS" in a font that suggests you should be hoarding toilet paper. And then something happened that nobody in media seems interested in reporting, for obvious reasons. The world just... switched suppliers? Like changing your internet provider except the internet provider is the entire effing global energy economy. American oil exports are approaching record levels. Gulf Coast refineries are running at 95% capacity. Supertankers that were mid-ocean on their way to the Persian Gulf literally turned around and headed to Texas. That's not a metaphor. Ship tracking data shows them doing U-turns in the Indian Ocean. Meanwhile China, which was getting 45% of its oil imports through Hormuz and paying basement prices for sanctioned Iranian crude, is now competing with Japan and Europe for the same expensive American barrels. Chinese manufacturers are already raising prices 20% on goods headed to the US. So to summarize: Iran played its biggest card and the main result is that the United States became the world's emergency gas station and China's cheap energy subsidy evaporated. This is either the most elaborate coincidence in the history of geopolitics... or someone planned the sequence Venezuela -> Iran -> profits! I'll let you figure out which one

JUST IN - Trump orders the U.S. Navy to blockade the Strait of Hormuz to "any and all ships trying to enter, or leave." Also instructing the U.S. Navy to seek and interdict every vessel in international waters that has paid a toll to Iran: "No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas."

@gorilla_rape And here people were worried about the petro-dollar collapsing. Pretty easy to trade oil in the dollar when a majority of the oil is created by the country who also happens to… print the dollar…

Israel has a nuclear weapon and they are hostile to Iran. Then why can’t Iran have a nuclear weapon as a deterrent? If you want Iran to end its nuclear program, then Israel should end its nuclear program too.

Many times, there is no value in a video of a street quarrel. But this is genuine, uniquely informative: A British left-winger reacts to real Iranians who stand with the Israeli flag. They plainfully and with great pain on the massacre by the Islamic Regime explain to her the facts. Listen

Literally no one cares about a “loss” at this point. Most people thought it was a dumb idea in the first place and the sooner you end a dumb idea, the more credit you get. Escalating would literally mean the end for the economy, the GOP, JD Vance and all kind of other things, including Trumps legacy - and nearly everyone knows that at this point. That’s why I have confidence this is over - it would be just too suicidal to continue and also - they had now time to snap out of it

I think Hormuz has broken Trump. We always say he's inconsistent and changes his mind. But this is different. I don't think he's ever been this all over the place on an issue in such a short period of time. "OPEN HORMUZ OR YOUR CIVILIZATION DIES." "We don't need Hormuz, it's Europe's problem." "Oh actually, we're probably going to have a deal with the Iranians to run it together." "It's great Hormuz is not open, we get to sell more oil!" "Actually, Hormuz is open! The media is lying again." When he's been inconsistent before, usually he cycles through different positions, at least showing some consistency for a short period of time. Here he's constantly saying contradictory things in the same breath, over and over again. I think he realizes he's stuck. He can let Iran have Hormuz and say it doesn't matter or lie about what happened. MAGA idiots may believe him, but he'll be a laughing stock to everyone else. Or he can pivot back to "DESTROY THEIR CIVILIZATION," send oil to $150, and hope it works. Either 1) more war, which wrecks the economy going into the midterms, or 2) total loss, and maybe the economy recovers if Iran allows enough traffic through, but this goes along with what is probably the worst strategic defeat in American history. Just terrible options all around.

Jo you’re wrong on this. Escalation won’t end the economy. Keeping status quo with Iran and allowing them to do what they have been doing isn’t an option… the potential for a much better future with them contained and defanged. So in my opinion, just keep the aircraft carriers there and keep bombing anything and everything that has to do with nukes, missiles, and drones. Heck start figuring out economical ways to do it. Make it a competition for US suppliers, who can create the least expensive weapon system to get the job done.
