Hindutva is not a religion and is not Hinduism. It was founded by Brahmanas belonging to the organisation called the RSS—Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh—in the early 1920s. It claimed a distinct Hindu identity which was intended as a Hindu control over Indian society. It internalised the colonial comprehension of Hinduism and the Indian past, disallowing the democratisation of Indian society. This is not new to historians, as the social control of religion over society has been written about at length. But this becomes a specific case relevant to the India of current times.

See the irony of history. Pakistan inherited the Indus Valley Civilization, built around the Indus River that flows from the Himalayas to the Arabian Sea. India inherited the Ganges basin and much of the rest. For Hindutva India, the irony is even starker: many of its Vedic roots lie in Pakistan. And what it markets to the world like Taj Mahal is a relic of the great Muslim civilization.
