Advanced Prostate Cancer Consensus Conference
Local anaesthetic transperineal biopsy versus transrectal prostate biopsy in prostate cancer detection (TRANSLATE) sciencedirect.com/science/articl… The TRANSLATE trial was a randomized clinical study comparing local anaesthetic ultrasound-guided transperineal biopsy (LATP) and transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsy (TRUS) for #ProstateCancer diagnosis. Conducted at ten UK hospitals, the trial included biopsy-naive men suspected of having prostate cancer following MRI. Participants were randomized to receive either LATP or TRUS biopsy, with the primary outcome being the detection of Gleason Grade Group (GGG) 2 or higher prostate cancer. LATP detected more GGG 2 or higher cases (60%) compared to TRUS (54%), with fewer infections requiring hospital admission in the LATP group. However, LATP was reported as more immediately painful and embarrassing. Findings highlight key differences in detection rates, side effects, and patient experience between the two biopsy methods, offering valuable insights for clinical decision-making. @mercaderclaudia @Mutieraslan @JessWhitburn @Freddie_Hamdy @Mattpingchao @JimCatto @AltanOmerElvis @sashi_kommu @DrBenEddy @HideYamaUrol @LambAlastair

Shocking but sadly not surprising ⁃63% of female surgeons reported sexual harassment vs 24% men ⁃11% experienced forced physical contact for career opportunities vs 0.7% men “women and men in the surgical workforce are living different realities” academic.oup.com/bjs/advance-ar…

@rosieICM @frantait85 @morefluids @Anaes_Trainees This is one area where North America is way ahead of Europe, and our study was based on work from there. We would be happy to collaborate and share our survey so data can be collected in other specialties 👍

What an eye opening study. Reading it leaves me feeling sad and with many more questions. How about non-surgical specialties and how can we shine a brighter light on this? Occupational exposure quite similar in #anaesthetics @morefluids @rosieICM @Anaes_Trainees

Interesting findings from @JessWhitburn and colleagues: Pregnancy loss rates in surgeons were 35 per cent in those aged under 35 years - a rate that is OVER 3 TIMES that which would be expected in this age group. @bykatewomersley @RoshanaMN academic.oup.com/bjs/advance-ar…

@frantait85 @morefluids @rosieICM @Anaes_Trainees Our control group was “childbearing non-surgeon partners” many of whom were medics in non-surgical specialties. We found an equally high pregnancy loss rate although unfortunately we didn’t have age data for this group. Another study is definitely needed.

Our study looking at pregnancy and parenting experiences of trainee surgeon has been published. As a surgical trainee and a mum of 2 the results have been quite shocking but sadly not unexpected. Time for a culture change in surgical training #womeninsurgery #parentsinsurgery

@vardon91 Don’t think this applies to trainees on the old contract either (at least that is what HR told me)

@katie_mellor_ @SarahSgorse Interesting findings similar to what we saw from American studies when doing the lit review for our gender divergence paper! Very worrying and shows the UK is no different 😔

@deboraheastwood @UKPOPStudy @JessWhitburn Definitely something I think we need to look at in General Surgery in the UK too given the shift patterns and busy/demanding on calls in the specialty, similar to T&O, although T&O of course has additional challenges with radiation exposure etc too
