My mom cried on her birthday because I waited until 5:30 PM to call her. Yeah, you read that right. I'm 30, she's 74. I finished work, picked up the phone, and wished her a happy birthday. To me, that's a normal evening call. But she was so upset I hadn't called or texted earlier that day, she actually started crying on the phone. Now I feel like the absolute worst person for making her emotional on her special day, but I'm also really taken aback by the whole thing. Was I in the wrong?

The Knicks’ core five (Brunson, KAT, OG, Mikal, and Hart) are all around 29-30 years old, meaning they can realistically keep this group together and make deep playoff runs for the next 4-5 years. But after running several offseason scenarios, I’ve come to a realization: if the Knicks want to keep this core intact for the foreseeable future while still competing for championships, they may have to let Mitch and Shamet walk. If the Knicks pay both of them, they’ll likely end up above the second apron, losing a significant amount of roster-building flexibility. That could shorten this championship window to another 2 years or so. Letting them walk and drafting their replacements (potentially Isaiah Evans and Tarris Reed Jr.) would allow the Knicks to keep their core together, get younger, and add cost-controlled talent that helps sustain long-term contention. Personally, while Mitch and Shamet are good players and I’m grateful for the role they played in helping bring a championship to New York, I think it’s smarter to invest in younger, cost-controlled talent than to potentially shorten your title window for two players who will be approaching their 30s. We’ve already seen what this core five is capable of. I’d rather watch them compete for another 4-5 years than go all-in for just 2 more.

Alright, seems that we will not be operating as a 2nd apron team this off-season, which is fine, but it makes the draft much more important now. Quick mock 2026-27 Knicks team I came up with that keeps them below the 2nd apron. Starters: PG: Jalen Brunson SG: Mikal Bridges SF: Josh Hart PF: OG Anunoby C: Karl-Anthony Towns Bench: PG: Jose Alvarado (Opts into 4.5 mil option) SG: Deuce McBride SF: Isaiah Evans (Selected at pick 24) PF: Mo Diawara (Re-signs on 3y/21 mil deal) C: Tarris Reed Jr. (Selected at pick 31) 3rd String: PG: Tyler Kolek SG: Jordan Clarkson (Signed on vet min) PF: Jeremy Sochan (Signed on vet min) C: Ariel Hukporti (Signed on vet min) Total Payroll: 221.3 mil Second Apron: 222.6 mil This roster keeps the Knicks about 1.3 mil below that second apron line.

@knicks_union I'd rather trade Mikal or Hart. Mitch is too valuable to the Knicks. There's no replacement for him.

@djviggi @PolymarketHoops @Ian_OConnor It's not lost on me whose words you're echoing. It was DOLAN who wanted Thibs gone. He did not like Thibs telling him things like "NO! Cam Reddish isn't gonna fit my system!" Dolan used any minor complaint he cld extract to paper over fact this was him Mikal&Deuce took the hit

@TheNBABase @CantankerusFemi @Ian_OConnor If you listen to the Dolan speech, Thibs was a dictator and Brown incorporated player input and put some ownership of results on players. My way or the highway is now a relic of coaching past in pro sports.

Tom Thibodeau is reportedly "still hurt" and felt a "sense of betrayal" by the Knicks organization following his firing, per @Ian_OConnor “Before the season, The Athletic reported that Thibodeau was deeply wounded and “had a sense of betrayal” after his firing and believed some people in the organization he had helped over the years didn’t return that loyalty. On Tuesday, a friend of Thibodeau’s said he is “genuinely very happy for the players and his guys” for winning a historic championship. “But Tom is still hurt that the decision-makers made it appear he needed to be replaced.”” (nytimes.com/athletic/73679…)

What it will cost to keep Mitchell Robinson, here’s my breakdown‼️ Skeptics: 3 years, $54M ($18M/year) — still worried about injuries. Most GMs: 4 years, $80M ($20M/year) — healthy championship center. Championship premium: 4 years, $96M ($24M/year) — big playoff impact, title winner. Bidding war: 4 years, $112M ($28M/year) — multiple teams competing. Knicks fans: 4 years, $100–120M ($25–30M/year) — pay him whatever it takes. Most likely if healthy and a key part of a championship: 4 years, $90–100M ($22–25M/year).
