The Karnataka High Court has made strong observations in a case involving Krishna J. Rao, son of Puttur BJP leader Jaganivas Rao, who is accused of deceiving a young woman after a long-term relationship and fathering her child. Hearing a petition filed by Krishna J. Rao seeking dismissal of the case, the court noted that a DNA test has confirmed he is the father of the child. In light of this, the bench observed that marriage between the two could be a suitable course of action and emphasized that abandoning the woman and the child would be unjust. The bench, led by Justice M. Nagaprasanna, also questioned whether the accused would be willing to provide monthly maintenance of ₹10,000 to the woman. The matter has been adjourned to April 24, with directions for the accused to submit his response. During the hearing, counsel for the accused, P.P. Hegde, argued that the couple had been in a relationship for seven years but claimed that ongoing criminal proceedings had prevented a settlement. He further alleged that political rivals were attempting to damage the reputation of the accused’s family. According to the complaint, the accused allegedly promised to marry the woman, with whom he had been acquainted since their school days, and she later became pregnant. While he initially resisted marriage, he reportedly agreed under pressure. However, as he had not attained the legal age of 21 at the time, his father is said to have assured that the marriage would be conducted later. After the child was born and Krishna J. Rao turned 21, he allegedly refused to marry the woman. The dispute subsequently led to a police case, resulting in his arrest and later release on bail. When the accused reportedly denied paternity, a DNA test was conducted on court orders. Samples sent to a Bengaluru laboratory confirmed that he is the biological father of the child. Despite this, he has continued to refuse marriage, and mediation efforts, including those reportedly involving senior BJP leaders, have not yielded a resolution. The case has sparked significant public and political attention.
