@action_ap Post residency tip if your specialty is in to shift work - find an attending job that builds this into the schedule. Ie the person who comes on shift after you starts an hour before your shift ends and the pager switches to them then. Not at the END of your shift. Game changer.

Unspoken residency rule: If a consult or new admit comes in within 5 minutes of check-out time, (ex: 5:55pm) volunteer to take care of the consult so the person who’s been there all day can go home on time (since you’re going to be at the hospital for the next shift anyways!) Not everyone does this & it’s personal/team preference on the semantics of it all, but I feel it is the right thing to do.

Last story of the day. I met a family to chat yesterday. Their child is one year old, and they're just starting to realise that the baby has profound and complicated developmental problems. Neural. Brain. Motor function. Eyesight. Hearing. They say that they're having to wait months for appointments And that it's weird because the child of one of their neonatal class is discovering exactly the same problems at the same time. Strange coincidence. I mean they love this kid. They absolutely desperately love them. But they're realising that life is going to be very different to what they thought it was going to be. Two children in a group of about ten. Strange coincidence.
