Netanyahu could have certainly handled relations with Obama better, but Obama had the bizarre conceit that the way to bring peace to the Middle East was to upgrade relations with Iran and downgrade relations with the Saudis and Israel, to create a more equitable balance of power that would then (somehow?) lead to peace. It's beyond me to figure out how leading voices in his administration, including Obama himself, came to believe this nonsense, which came straight from the Iran-linked NIAC and its leader Trista Parsi, but that's what led to the relevant tension.
