Unless you really want this tiny form factor, then I wouldn't even recommend it for an entry level PC at all. Who are these reviewers? Look at what you can get for the same price.

If this is the hurdle to save 100+$ dollars, when the internet is loaded with free resources, we might be cooked as a society lol Valve should consider selling preconfigured USB’s with software to update ‘em!

I want the Steam Machine to succeed. The deck was the crawling phase, the machine will be the walking phase, and the frame will be the running phase. Prove me wrong Valve, drop a Machine that slaps and makes me want the Frame outta pure FOMO. Send me into debt daddy Gabe~

@Skoshche @PolarStar64 Also I absolutely LOVE Linux and not trying to shit on it. Just after being on all sides of the field (including Mac) they all work great as long as you keep up on updates. Mac is arguably the easiest though. 😅 iPhone is the true sleeper console! 🤣

@Skoshche @PolarStar64 If people were forced to update their PC’s like consoles do - you’d realize how quickly Windows runs like a console. Linux and Proton are not immune to those issues either. Plenty of known bugs and crashes with stock Steam Decks. You just haven’t personally ran into one yet.

Can we please stop saying these machines have "no tinkering required", they're literally a PC, one running Linux at that, you ARE going to have to tinker.

Ill take that back, there are some pros & cons if you can stomach the price entry. - Open Eco System - Emulation, of Classic Games - Portability - Steam OS w/Linux support, which removes gamers dependency on Windows. - (Potential) optimization is AAA-AA games being optimistic.

Multi-factor: -PS5ish level performance (6yr old console) -1k price point clearly not competing with consoles -Size is the only benefit at this point -No GPU/CPU upgrade path, will age out like consoles and require whole unit upgrades Planned Obsolescence in a smaller box.

@mikesulsenti @IconEnjoyer Because as someone who builds PC’s, I caught a prebuilt on sale that was cheaper than if I had ordered the parts myself not including shipping. All name brands parts cept the PSU, and that’s cheap to replace vs the money saved. Some of ya’ll just like burning money lol

@Skoshche @PolarStar64 Idk what “sizeably less” means in this context. I boot up my PC, install game, and play game. Sizably less game selection due to anti-cheat support maybe? Sizably less customization? Love Linux, but idk why people act like it’s some monumental task to game on Windows lol

@PolarStar64 To be fair it is a sizeably less amount of tinkering required, and far less if you are solely limiting yourself to approved things like verified working games and the steam store If you get into emulation or not fully approved games that's on you for branching out

@cetraxiv @rtm_pete It was explored, and failed. NUC’s have been in circulation for years often around the same price. Even USB connected full-size GPU’s exist(ed). The sacrifice is often performance due to cooling limitations. Most of the Steam Machine case is filled with a heatsink iirc.

@rtm_pete prebuilt small form factor gaming PCs is a niche that has not been exploited yet, and the few exceptions that exist are easily at least 2x - 3x more expensive than the steam machine

I'm seeing a bunch of "here's a PC TWICE as powerful as a Steam Machine that you could build for the same price!" They all have no-name RAM, SSD, and power supplies that all have a much higher risk of failing and a 0% chance of you getting a warranty claim. Gamers Nexus put out a build that shows you could save ~$120 with similar performance with a much larger form factor. So $120 gets you the tiny form factor and a pre-installed OS and setup. The value proposition exists. It might not be right for you, and certainly isn't right for me at that price, but there's a market for this thing.

@Antifant_Troet @BoomaDingo @Sirregenal1 @gunburd There’s multiple circulating Twitter. It’s only about 100$ in savings, but includes a 12GB VRAM GPU (from AMD) over the 8GB in the steam machine. Gamers Nexus also built their own that ran better for cheaper.

I see armies of nerds crying 'Valve wont subsidize my console cheaper - i pinky promise to buy games' like its a charity project are already out in full force. Ask Meta how that strategy worked out. If you cant afford it at $1500 you aint affording $1500 in games either.

My take on the Steam Machine: Blame AI for driving hardware shortages. I don’t blame Steam, but the machine around 750$ was decent vs console pricing. At the $1k mark, entry level/on-sale gaming PC’s come into play instead. The device isn’t bad, but the cost to value ratio is.

For console gamers, current gen consoles still better value. Otherwise, Steam Machine is for people with money to burn and no clue about PC’s. Can’t even upgrade the GPU later!

Yes, in that sense The RX 9060 XT is better than I remembered it being, compared to the RX 7600 But it's just barely doing high settings on UE5 and similar games at 1080p. For a TV setup, people are either going to have 1080p 60hz, 4K 60hz, or 4K 120hz And for the latter two, it's going to be upscaled for the TV resolution no matter what or you limit it to 1080p I'm am not arguing against building your own PC, I operate a DIY tiers building guide site. I am only saying that the Steam Machine has a market for the people who will not do that

I love #StarCitizen, or at least the idea of it. But every time I login lately, this has basically been the experience…so I’m back on my WoW grind for now I guess 🤷‍♀️

@SamHulick @HoodiKarmea @MokuMekaPilotVT @Vesmic87 Steam Remote Play and apps like Sunshine/Moonlight have been a thing. You can literally play off your main rig anywhere… Tiny refurb PC with Moonlight in the living room, main rig with Sunshine in the gaming room. Never had a problem.

@HoodiKarmea @MokuMekaPilotVT @Vesmic87 Products are usually made to target a specific problem. There is a HUGE market of PC gamers age 45+ who are tired of sitting at their desks because they spend enough time there as it is. Gaming PCs are often eyesores and wouldn't look great in a living room.

It's wild to me that people don't understand why someone would want the Steam Machine. IMO: - No Windows driver BS - Couch gaming FTW - Steam games get steeply discounted & more frequently than console games - Future integrations with Deck & Frame
