@MSmithDetroit @papatigermike Agree, Mike. I think that’s why there’s far more TJ surgery, it’s almost become where it’s expected, especially of the hard throwers for them to have it at least once.

@papatigermike @MarcAPerna It's certainly not good for pitcher health. Very complicated to try to disincentivize this behavior though, especially in high school kids.

Random 40-man player note #37: Tarik Skubal I was part of the group that drafted Justin Verlander and I got to watch him through the peak of his career until I left in 2015. I also grew up a Red Sox fan and used to schedule my week around catching Pedro Martinez's starts in 1999 when he was at the peak of his powers. And I can honestly say that watching Tarik Skubal the last two years is better than any stretch I saw from Verlander. The only comparable I have is peak 1999 Pedro, when he put up one of the most dominant pitching seasons of all time.

And he got worse. 4 runs allowed, not much swing and miss

Skubal not great today - too much contact from lefty, hitters off of him, and behind in the count a little too much

@MarcAPerna This will be a real challenge for HOF elections in the coming decades, curious how it plays out.

@MSmithDetroit Yeah, I still haven’t seen the years Pedro had for a couple of seasons. Tarik is in that ballpark but again pitching far fewer innings makes a difference in how I view them as major leagues, comparing eras, etc.. it’s not his fault, just the way baseball is managed today.

I see what you're saying for sure. Verlander's an inner circle HOFer. Skubal's not even close to that. I was merely observing how I felt watching them start to start in comparison to each other and peak Pedro. (I was lucky enough to randomly watch Pedro's 17K 1-hitter of the Yankees, still the single most dominant game I've ever seen.)

@MSmithDetroit You helped to make my point, JV was purposely throwing 92 to 95 early in games(brings avg down). Until Tarik does it over multiple years like JV, then we have to be in a wait-and-see mode. I agree, as a six inning pitcher right now in “today’s” era it’s Skubal vs today’s field

You point out a challenge - it is very hard to compare across eras. At the same time, two other things are going on here: 1. Starters are being asked to go all-out on every pitch way more. Verlander often would "coast" at 94-96 for the first 3-4 innings and you'd only see the 97-99 (and occasionally 100+) late. Skubal throws fewer innings, but he also throws harder on average. Skubal averaged 97.0 in 2024 and 97.7 (!!!) last year. JV never averaged more than 96.2, when he did so in 2009 (this only goes back to 2007 though). 2. Verlander is very much a survivor of the test-for-a-witch trial. Throw him in the pond, if he sinks and dies, then he wasn't a witch (not a sturdy starter), but if he floats/can swim, he's clearly a witch and should be hanged (in this case, he gets to pitch at age 43)!

@MSmithDetroit What JV did often going 8 innings and an occasional complete game to me was more impressive even than Tarik at times… he also did it for a longer stretch. Don’t get me wrong-The dominance of Skubal in 5 to 7 inning stretches is awesome! He’s done that for a little over 2 yrs

Michigan finally wore down Howard and they are absolutely dominating in the second half. Finally got their size more involved and actually we’re playing better defense on the perimeter.

@IYKbaseball When I was listening to the game, and also following it on stat cast, his command was not good. Which is always when he gets in trouble. Last year, the first two or three months, he had good command and good velocity.

I'll need to watch some of the Mize outing..but any outing Mize gets 6 whiffs on his split makes me smile..normally he has solid to good FB command..obviously although he threw 69% 4S strikes..he didn't throw them when he needed to..kind of encouraged by the data more than most

@swarheit I agree, Scott and that’s exactly what Justin Rogers said. He’s a good player to have and they definitely needed help in the run defense from last year. But they are still shy on pass rushing.

No one‘s been a bigger supporter of Casey Mize than me. But he has really not been good this spring. He is missing some bats, but his overall command has been awful. His velocity is fine but he’s looking too much like the last two months of last year. Fifth starter right now.

@WolverinePulse @971theticketxyt There’s absolutely no correlation between football and baseball in terms of putting your body on the line. They’re both pro sports, but that’s about it. I guarantee if Skubal wasn’t in the last year of his contract and the team and his agent wanted him to play he would have.

@MarcAPerna @971theticketxyt Where is the lack of knowledge? What is he missing? I wouldn’t say soft, a lot of guys who you’d have to lock in a closet to keep out have trouble understanding. And he knows a little about putting his body on the line.

@971theticketxyt Jon Jansen just called Skubal soft. I am seeing and/or hearing some of the worst takes on this phenomenal player, and good person as well, I’ve ever heard. I like Jon, but this is a joke. The lack of baseball knowledge on the station is horrific. No perspective

@MarcRyanOnAir @g_rizen A vast majority of great players didn’t show up. Marc, this was the dumbest take you’ve ever had. And you’ve had a few just like everyone else has, but this was ridiculous.

@g_rizen Correct. In a game everyone knew would be low-scoring, Skubal’s rookie replacement allows 2 out of 3 runs. You don’t show up? You get the blame.

@IYKbaseball My biggest problem with 97.1 The Ticket, isn’t the overall station itself. It’s that almost none of them have any serious baseball knowledge. Caputo wasn’t bad, and by the way I hope he’s doing OK, at least he researched stuff.

I think anyone who is mad at Tarik Skubal .. get a fucking life ..same fools who are mad about last fall and leaving the game at 100 pitches .. none of them can throw a ball 30 feet.. much less 100X.. greatness is greatness .. in every form.. check yourself people

@deeptocenter I’ve been in sales basically all my life so I’ve always taken off the opening day. It’s easy for me to do in my line of work as I control most of my schedule in fairness. But I’ve been taking off or opening day at least the half day for 25 years or more.
