Two years ago, we acquired a seed company. The main thesis was simple: we have a large audience of gardeners, all gardeners need seeds, and Botanical Interests is an incredible brand. In fact, it's the first pack of seeds I ever grew, over 10 years ago. This thesis worked out well. Simply by the nature of telling our audience the story of how Botanical Interests was now an Epic Gardening brand, we grew the online business over 60% in the first year. But the more interesting part of the acquisition logic to me are all of the 2nd order effects. Things we couldn't quite predict, but were highly likely to happen as a result. One of them is happening now. A fan of @epicgardening works at Petco, and we started a test program in their "Feed and Seed" rural stores last year. About 12 or so. The idea was to collaborate w/ them on a few dozen varieties of our seed that animal lovers could grow to feed to their pets. It crushed it. In '24, we expanded to ~200 stores. Next year, we'll be in 750-1,000 stores. This part of the "creator commerce" journey starts to get really exciting. You become a real player in the market once you start proving you can drive foot traffic into real stores. Excited to see what's to come in '25 :)
