@ohadelaide That was prescient advice indeed. I heard the same before my first visit to Hanoi, whilst seven months pregnant; stepping into the street for my maiden pedestrian voyage I thought “Omg what am I doing I will be the worst parent ever” but yeah it was ok— the system somehow works!

So we were told by someone in Thailand that once we reached Vietnam, you just have to trust fall into the street and walk and never make eye contact and miraculously the hordes of motorbikes WILL miss you. And he was 100% right. And it is absolutely terrifying and thrilling.

Attention internet. This is what I look like today. If you have to show early transition pictures from 15 years ago to attack me, it’s intellectually dishonest. The irony in these attacks in this was an era where I didn’t take hair, makeup and skills like color correcting my skin and contouring seriously. I just wanted go about my day like most women. It’s ironic to have to have your face taken apart and stick to the most gender-stereotypical appearance to appease the gender criticals. But here we are.

This is also happening in the fitness industry… I have been a personal trainer, and mentor for over 18 years👇🏾 In June of 2020, I decided to host an open forum about Racism and the Fitness professional, focusing on how to be part of the solution using our own sphere of influence. In the discussion, Seven health and fitness professionals from different backgrounds came together to share their experiences. In my outreach campaign to invite fitness professionals from diverse backgrounds and experience levels, I began to see a pattern of less than positive responses and perspectives. Unfortunately, I also received more silence than expected. I will share some of my interactions and important take-aways from my conversations that reflect the pervasive nature of racism in the fitness industry. The first reply to my request for participation in the forum provided me with a lesson about personal views that do not actually reflect the business’ public profile. This is from a well-known fitness leader, podcast host and business coach: “Hey Julio, I appreciate you sharing this and trying to influence others in a positive way with your unique experience. I personally do not agree systemic racism exists, and I hope you can respect my beliefs as I respect yours.  Hope all is well my friend.” It did hurt when I read his reply, however it did not deter me from wanting to connect with other industry leaders on this topic. Obviously, the attitudes and emotional responses cited here vary, but these comments point up the need to address racism in our industry. One of the most powerful tools we have is to initiate conversation, and work towards organizational changes to address racism together.

I’m super interested in how the right has captured the physical culture space ( MMA/ UFC / CrossFit). Some of the fiercest right wing/ Anti-diversity / pro-Trump spaces I’ve seen online have been the male gen z followers of bodybuilding / martial arts brands and influencers.
