There is allegedly massive corruption in supply of ration and fuel to troops deployed on our borders. It is an entrenched and well-oiled operation, which has been going on for decades, maybe since Independence. Back in 1986, dad was posted to Srinagar from Udhampur. We took a private cab, an Hindustan Ambassador which had single digit mileage, for Srinagar. In those days there weren't many fuel stations on the route. Dad asked the driver if getting fuel on the way would be an issue. The driver smiled confidently, "No, Sir. I will get it courtesy of an army fuel convoy." And he did. On the way, there were dhabas/shops where army fuel tankers stopped and sold petrol/diesel and replaced it with water in the tankers to maintain the right weight. These dhabas/shops then sold the fuel to needy motorists at higher rates. The real sufferers of this corruption were the soldiers whose vehicles broke down frequently because the fuel had water in it. In Srinagar we used to get milk from an army dairy situated in Badami Bagh Cantt. The milk was so bad that it never came to boil and it smelled weird. It was totally synthetic. On the way from plains, either the milk was siphoned off and replaced with synthetic milk by the time it reached Srinagar or the tankers were full of synthetic milk right from the point they started their journey.
