Big Sainsbury’s used to be happy to unlock trolleys for me to use. Now they insist I must carry a pound coin to do so, like it’s the Middle Ages. Why the regression, @sainsburys? Why do I have to carry around a pound coin I will use for literally no other purpose than unlocking my ability to shop?

Someone earning £50,000 pays roughly: • £7,486 in income tax • £2,994 in National Insurance • £2,250 in student loan repayments (if they went to university) That’s about £12,700 in total deductions… an effective deduction rate of around 25%, not a 57% tax rate. Student loans are a bad system, let’s not pretend otherwise but this is nonsense framing.

@stuey_beef £32k for a logo is dirt cheap for rebranding. How much would renationalising all the rolling stock cost? As they ROSCO would need to be compensated for then rolling stock value… you’re likely looking at many £10s of billions….

When Labour nationalised the first rail operator in May 2025, it needed a new brand for Great British Railways. So it commissioned one. The logo cost £32,400 of taxpayer money. Not the infrastructure. Not the rolling stock. Not improved signalling, faster services, or better wi-fi. The logo. The government says nationalisation will save taxpayers “up to £150 million a year” previously paid in management fees to private operators. That claim appears in almost every press release. It is the centrepiece of the entire programme’s justification. Here is the problem. The three rolling stock companies — the ones that own and lease the actual trains — pay out £390 million a year in private dividends. Every year. Money that flows entirely outside the nationalised structure Labour has built. So the maths, roughly: save £150 million in management fees. Keep paying £390 million in ROSCO dividends. Net position: still £240 million a year worse off than genuine full nationalisation would be. But the logo looks lovely.
