No child should have to hop the turnstile on their way to school because their OMNY Pass got damaged or lost. Not only is it humiliating but it also puts kids into direct contact with law enforcement and heavily contributes to fare evasion culture.
Shabazz Stuart@ShabazzStuart

Transit should definitely address this ASAP; those OMNY cards that kids get are flimsy and often take weeks to replace. (cue my own MTA childhood trauma) Seems bizarre not to have a mobile alternative for a system designed to work with smartphones...

.@ZohranKMamdani now oversees @NYCSchools. He’s called New York “the most segregated public school system in America.” But our board chair @Dyrnwyn has a question for the mayor: Will he take on what’s driving this educational redlining? Assigning kids to public schools based on where they live. wsj.com/opinion/why-wo…

@Josmar_Trujillo I listened to the podcasts where the retired boss cops talk about policing protests. They often to the left of what council is doing. Bizarre.

@Josmar_Trujillo The school one is especially bad, could be used against parents and teachers at their own school or keep people away from Tweed.

@RossBarkan Rejection of AI will paint the progressive wing as anti-growth. The momentum in the party is now with moderates. AOC will not be able to compete on a national level with Healey, Spanberger, Sherrill, even Hochul will do better.

It'll be smart for Democrats to start treating AI money like they're already treating AIPAC money. Rejecting it will become a litmus test (with good incentives) that will, over the long-term, provide far better outcomes for our democracy.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez@AOC

Politicians - especially Dems - should pledge not to take AI money. They are buying up influence ahead of the midterms, and Dems who take AI $ will lose authority and trust as the public bears the cost. Their money will end up being toxic anyway. People are catching on.

They said prices would go down – and they're higher than ever. They said no more wars – and we're sending troops to Iran. They said they'd Make America Healthy Again – and now measles is back. The consequence of all of this is our kids' lives and futures. We deserve better.
Eli Newman@other_eli

Michigan is recording its first measles case in a child under 5. The Washtenaw County outbreak has now reached 7 cases, all in unvaccinated individuals. One person has been hospitalized.

Joe Scarborough on the Republican shutdown: “You want to run Venezuela, but you can’t run Laguardia? You want to change governments in Iran, but you can’t even make Houston’s airport work? You want to take over Greenland, and yet you can’t even make Atlanta Hartsfield function?”

Let's be precise about who is responsible here. Under New York City's mayoral control structure, the Mayor appoints the Schools Chancellor. The Chancellor runs the DOE. The DOE decides what goes into classrooms, and who gets to speak in them. That means Zohran Mamdani is, through his Chancellor, directly responsible for the school system that promoted his wife's work while blocking a Holocaust survivor. That is a conflict of interest. No one should expect this administration to investigate itself, or to take any action. The governance structure doesn't work that way. What does work: federal law. Title VI of the Civil Rights Act prohibits viewpoint discrimination in federally funded institutions on the basis of race, color, and national origin. New York City public schools receive federal funding. The Office for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Education has jurisdiction and enforcement authority. The question OCR needs to answer is simple: what neutral, consistently applied standard governed the decision to exclude Sami Steigmann while promoting Rama Duwaji's work? If no such standard exists - and it doesn't appear to - that's not a policy disagreement. It's a federal civil rights violation. New York families don't need to wait for City Hall. They need to file. @TheLeoTerrell #TitleVI #NYCSchools #Mamdani #EndJewHatred
Gerard Filitti@GerardFilitti

Let’s be clear about what happened here. Sami Steigmann, 86 years old, survivor of a Nazi labor camp and subjected to medical experimentation as a child, was blocked from speaking to Brooklyn middle schoolers because of his pro-Israel views. Meanwhile, artwork by the incoming Mayor’s wife was finding its way into those same classrooms. Rama Duwaji is a pro-Palestinian “advocate” who illustrated work for an author who publicly described Jews as “vampires” and “parasites.”   Her work was being promoted in New York City schools while a Holocaust survivor was shown the door. This predates Mamdani’s mayoralty - which makes it worse, not better. It means the ideological rot in the New York City Public Schools system runs deeper than any one administration.  This isn’t about who sits in City Hall. It’s about a school bureaucracy that has internalized exactly the kind of viewpoint discrimination that Title VI was designed to prohibit. The legal question practically writes itself: what legitimate educational interest is served by silencing a Holocaust survivor? There is none. The reason isn’t pedagogical. It’s political. New York families deserve answers. And if they don’t get them, they may have legal options. #Mamdani #ZohranMamdani #RamaDuwaji #EndJewHatred #NYCPolitics @ccampy

Wow. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy says the agency had to "beg" to get a key LaGuardia crash investigator (a specialist on air traffic control) through TSA in Houston after she had been waiting in line for THREE HOURS.

“And Stay Out!,” a new report by the nonpartisan watchdog Available to All, shows how children are prevented from enrolling in successful public schools solely due to attendance zones. @NYCMayor decries the socioeconomic and racial divisions in @nycschools, but has not addressed exclusionary school zoning based on housing, aka "redlining," an op-ed in @WSJ argues. wsj.com/opinion/why-wo…
