the reason why psychiatry is still not understood as well as other medical branches is that we have, for the longest time, considered mind to be separate from the brain.
A faculty that was thought to exist in the metaphysical world, could not be treated or dealt with, scientifically.
We still continue to do so, by labelling psychiatric illnesses as a direct result of stressful situations.
“They are depressed because they have a loan.”
“They died by suicide because they lost their romantic partner.”
“They have anxiety because anybody would have it with the kind of family they live with.”
“They have OCD because their parent was busy scheduling them into rules.”
Because when it comes down to the loan causing depression, the treatment for it becomes its repayment, and suddenly the problem shifts from depression to loan, thus losing its biological aspect.
Yes, almost everybody might feel sad/anxious at times due to such stresses; but not everyone with a debt is depressed, not everyone with a recent loss dies by suicide, and not everyone brought up in a dysfunctional family becomes anxious themselves.
Yes, stress adds to psychiatric illnesses, and it in itself is amplified in PWMI. Some diseases are infact directly linked to stress, like PTSD, but reducing a mental health condition to a disequilibrium in the environment is not just taking away biology from the brain, but making it subject to sociology instead of a medical specialty.
