Two barriers surfaced in my research. 1) A bad brand actively deters 2) Without community, interest in your sports product dies on the vine.

The World Cup begins tomorrow, and many will watch the matches. Soccer reminds us of something we must not forget: life is not a race to show off on our own, but a path we learn to walk together. Anyone who does not know how to pass the ball, even if they have talent, has not yet understood the game. Anyone who does not know how to live with and for others has not yet understood life. #ApostolicJourney

Key Plays is a feature that is seemingly so simple on the outside, but has a lot going on just under the surface. So I broke down 1) How it likely works 2) How they measure its impact and 3) What streamers might do next with the product.

Whenever I miss the start to a game, I jump straight into the Key Plays. But How does YouTube TV actually know what was the important play? I started digging into it.

You guys, @VisitSeattle is doing a LIVE DRONE SCOREBOARD for each of the 6 World Cup matches taking place in Seattle. THAT IS SO COOL.

While the rest of the USMNT kicked it around, Pochettino has been talking to what looks to be a Starting XI. Matt Freese was in the circle. Matt Turner was not. @SportingTrib | #USMNT | #WorldCup

Regional sports networks are slowly going away. I wrote about it on my latest substack.

@linatheemo @SnapdragonStdm Friendlies are organized by the countries participating in the game, not by FIFA. They likely chose the location and venue for costs and logistics. But it’s no indication of how the World Cup logistics will be handled.

People say the US doesn’t deserve to host the World Cup like the last country to host didn’t use slave labor to build all their stadiums

@JSWC1995 This also applies to basketball. Yugoslavia may have been the best team sport nation in the world.

For some reason, whilst gearing myself up for the World Cup I began to think of the team Yugoslavia could have fielded this summer had they not broken up in 1992. So, without further ado, here is the unofficial Yugoslav team/squad for the 2026 World Cup

What do you think about FIFA's logo requirement? Do you like the consistency or would you rather see the host nation(s) design whatever they want?

We see this elsewhere in sports too. The NFL created brand guidelines for the Super Bowl in 2011. For about 10 years, the logo felt like a copy+paste lifeless template. But over the last few games we've been treated to slightly more creative interpretations.

Did you know the 2022 Korea/Japan FIFA World Cup has had the most influential logo in World Cup history?
