I encourage producers in their 20s, 30s, & 40s to invest a portion of profits (when they happen) into off-farm assets. Things like -Retirement accounts -Brokerage account -Non-ag real estate -Private businesses -Precious metals -Private lending -Life insurance -CDs Etc. Because when you're tweaking your estate plan in your 50s, 60s, & 70s, having those non-farm investments provides more options. Especially if there are off-farm kids. I realize there’s often a higher ROI on reinvesting back into your farm/ranch business, but having diversified assets can save the farm operation from being split between on & off farm children when you pass away. And starting early lets those investments compound & grow over the years.
