2 PLATOON WINS MIND THE GAP DEBATE COMPETITION The spirit of intellectual curiosity and digital readiness came alive at the Magaji Dan Yamusa NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Keffi as corps members participated in the 2026 Batch A Stream II Mind the Gap Debate Competition. After a compelling contest among all ten platoons, Platoon 2 emerged victorious, earning well-deserved applause from fellow corps members and officials present. The event opened with an engaging presentation by Mind the Gap Community Leader, Sunday Ochigbo, who set the tone for the day with powerful insights on the theme of the debate titled “Why NYSC is The Most Strategic Platform to Accelerate Inclusive AI Literacy and Competence.” Addressing the corps members, Mr. Ochigbo explained that the Digital Literacy for All initiative, sponsored by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), is designed to empower young Nigerians with the skills they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital world. He noted that NITDA aims to ensure that at least 70 percent of Nigerians attain digital literacy, with the goal of reaching 95 percent by the year 2030. He encouraged corps members to begin their digital journey by enrolling in the Digital Literacy for All (DL4All) programme, which equips learners with essential computer and online skills. He also introduced the Experience AI initiative, an opportunity open to all corps members who wish to gain foundational knowledge in Artificial Intelligence and develop hands-on competence in the field. Beyond AI, he highlighted Data Science Nigeria as an additional platform that offers valuable learning pathways for anyone interested in taking a deep dive into data science and analytics. Mr. Ochigbo reminded participants that these learning opportunities are not only beneficial for personal growth but can also be integrated into their Community Development Service projects, enabling them to upgrade their communities while acquiring relevant skills for the future. The atmosphere became even more electrifying as the ten platoons took turns arguing passionately on the debate topic. Their presentations were rich with facts, creativity and forward-thinking ideas, making the judges’ task a tough one. In the end, Platoon 2 secured the top position with an outstanding performance. Platoon 7 followed closely in second place, while Platoon 1 clinched the third position. It was a day that celebrated knowledge, innovation and the readiness of young Nigerians to embrace the future.

Akpabio Urges Igbo Youth to Reject Armed Struggle, Embrace Dialogue The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has appealed to youths in the South-East to shun armed struggle and embrace peaceful engagement with the Federal Government. Akpabio made the call at the funeral of Sir Albert Ikechukwu Nnamani, former Administrative Secretary of the defunct Oil Mineral Producing Area Development Commission, held in Ikem, Enugu State. Addressing attendees, the Senate President stressed that sustainable development can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace, urging community leaders and elders in the region to guide young people away from violence. “A situation whereby you try to assert independence through armed struggle from the Federal Government will fail. The state power will always overwhelm you,” he said. He assured that the National Assembly is willing to pursue legislative measures that could address longstanding concerns of the South-East, including the possibility of creating an additional state to ensure parity with other geopolitical zones. Akpabio also highlighted the need for negotiation rather than confrontation, noting that the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu is open to addressing perceived historical imbalances. He expressed concern over the economic impact of the “sit-at-home” order in parts of the South-East, particularly in commercial hubs like Onitsha, warning that such actions have negatively affected local businesses and livelihoods. Pressure Mounts on Benjamin Kalu to Join Abia Governorship Race as Stakeholders Purchase APC Form AHEAD of the 2027 governorship election in Abia State, pressure is mounting on the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, to join the race after a coalition of political stakeholders and opinion leaders purchased the All Progressives Congress (APC) nomination and expression of interest forms on his behalf. The forms were formally presented to him in Abuja on Saturday by the group, which said the move was driven by his track record in public service and leadership at the national level. Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the group leader, James Uko-Kalu (SAN), described Kalu as a unifying figure whose performance in the National Assembly has distinguished him as a capable leader. He noted that since his election into the House of Representatives in 2019, Kalu has made notable legislative contributions, serving as House Spokesperson before rising to his current position as Deputy Speaker. “We are here because we recognise the invaluable contributions the Deputy Speaker has made to Nigeria’s legislative process. From 2019 till date, we have followed his work closely and can attest to his outstanding performance,” he said.
