@nickelpin @EladNehorai A theory I’ve heard why so many people say college was the “best time of their lives” is because it’s the last time they lived in a walkable area close to friends and community.

What a perfect monument to the 2010’s. Soulless, Apple Store Chic type monochromatic design. Zero care taken to blend into surrounding environment. Pretentious, but vapid “live, laugh, love” type slogan engraved into the structure. Perfection.

A few in-progress shots of the Obama Presidential Center, taken this morning. The granite exterior is now in place, including words from Obama’s “You Are America” speech, visible in their entirety from a spot on Stony Island Avenue. The center’s plaza is also taking shape.

No one asked for this. NOBODY asked for EVERY avenue in Manhattan to be turned into shitty replicas of the ONLY bike lane in the city that actually makes sense, and is REMOVED FROM THE MAIN ROADS OF THE CITY. NO ONE ASKED FOR THIS. And CERTAINLY not working- or even middle-class New Yorkers, for that matter. This Communist nonprofit and their symbiotic relationship to NYC's Department of Transportation was foisted upon the city by affluent, white leftist Midwestern transplants. Who funds TransAlt?
Transportation Alternatives@TransAlt

Imagine a city where it’s as safe to bike on every street as it is on the Hudson River Greenway. That’s the city we’re fighting for.

@tee_dee404 @2024dion Immediately thought of this. This one has an interesting story, the building started construction despite being in the planned highway right of way, so they compromised with the tunnel structure.

@2024dion Fall River, MA Government Center built directly over I-195. (Around 25 years ago concrete did collapse only the highway causing major issues!!)

@paleonormie @YerbaMonster This sounds great on paper but likely wouldn’t sell well when new - but would likely be sought after on the used market by a small group of enthusiasts. Like a lot of the car-based trucks like the Chevy SSR or Subaru Baja.

@YerbaMonster No that one wasn’t styled correctly, they don’t want a tall convertible they want something that looks like an old jeep but is mechanically a CRV

I’m still surprised that no automakers have a Bronco/Wrangler styled drop top SUV that rides on a basic FWD crossover platform that seems like an obvious winner for boomers who previously would have bought convertibles

@Jalopnik I think the new Buicks are a legitimately sharp design (especially considering what they used to be). But an awful driving experience.

@Sl_eeem @sunflowermashu But why? So that friend can post the picture saying “look at me at the concert! Here’s a picture of my profile as proof!”?

To those that don’t understand: Imagine your friend couldn’t get a ticket to the concert. They’re at home, but they still want to post like they were there. So what happens? Someone at the concert helps them out. They take Phone 1 and open the friend’s profile (like their WeChat page). Then they use Phone 2 to take a picture of that profile… with the stage, lights, and crowd in the background. Now the final photo looks like: your friend’s account + the concert scene behind it. When your friend posts that picture, it gives the impression they were physically there.

@zal01 @spikesguides Like many aesthetic/design trends, it doesn’t have a name at the time it’s popular. It’s only years later that people notice it was ever a “thing” at all. It was coined years later by the Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute (CARI)

The aesthetic was called Global Village Coffee House and it was a reaction to 80s luxury and excess, where people wanted something that felt more authentic and less mass produced. They wanted to feel like they were in a coffee shop looking at the dogshit art on the wall, knowing it sucked but at least it was real and came from the heart. When I see it, I'm reminded of stores that didn't feel like sterile labs and felt like shops. It sounds like a Nora Jones CD. It tastes like a whole wheat bread turkey sandwich and mediocre black coffee. It's a comfy kind of nostalgia.

@progressiveact I drove in Manhattan, in the congestion pricing zone, in a rental car in December. It was one of the least stressful driving experiences in any city, because there were so few cars on the road. Ideally I would never drive in Manhattan, but the toll made it more bearable.

They really want y’all to believe this is just about “traffic” 🤔 Bike lanes everywhere. Bus lanes everywhere. Streets turning into outdoor lounges. Pay just to ENTER Manhattan. Now they talking about charging you to park near your own home… And if that’s not enough? Lower speed limits. Cameras everywhere 24/7. More rules for drivers… Less enforcement for bikes… But yeah… nothing to see here, right? 😭 Then they hit you with the “environment” angle… “Less cars = less pollution” Cool. But at what cost? Because when you make driving: More expensive… More stressful… More restricted… Of course people gonna stop driving. That’s not a coincidence. That’s strategy. More tolls. More cameras. Lower speeds. Less space for cars. And next up… more meters. Call it whatever you want… But don’t act like this isn’t a car phase-out in real time. Pay attention. Agree or I’m bugging? 👇 Follow me—because I’m breaking all of this down piece by piece. #nyc #mta #fyp #ny

@aaron_renn Good! Cities are places where people go to avoid seeing or interacting with the conservative garbage that’s infested the rest of the country. We don’t like you and don’t want you here.
