@Sam_Cranny @Tamereth @Sam_Cranny are they actually “forming” or “augmenting” though? By which I mean have they opened up new positions with additional workforce to add to the current ORBAT of the Units, or are the actually re-roling current Sqns, so still losing that armour cap from that sqn.

The British Army is forming Find and Strike Squadrons - units within its armoured regiments designed to integrate drones. All without reducing the number of tanks, which is a good thing for lots of reasons. The Queens Royal Hussars have the first unit and recently tested it at Sennelager (🔗below). Notably, a few units like this are showing up, the Paras also have the Phantom Platoon, designed to give them some CEMA capability.

@Sam_Cranny Let’s hope they’ve learned from the destruction of a British brigade during NATO's Hedgehog 2025 exercise in Estonia, showcasing the effectiveness of modern drone warfare. We seem slow to accept & adapt to the reality of modern combat - Mass deployment of drones works

@JoeDoeToday Right? Though I'd prefer it if the roles the armed forces were being asked to fulfil were reduced - might help take some pressure off.

@BO3673 I sort of like the mysterious names like "Phantom platoon," but recce-strike rolls off the tongue a little easier.

@Tamereth Where there's a will...or lack of funds. But still, it's good to see that the goal is augmenting rather than replacing the armour.

@Sam_Cranny It would be hard to reduce the number of tanks given how few we have operational.

Good stuff from the MoD. Article on @CalibreDefence to follow shortly.
Ministry of Defence 🇬🇧@DefenceHQ

This satellite image is of Russian naval base Olenya in the High North, along with their spy ship Yantar and specialist GUGI submarines before they departed port for UK waters. These vessels are designed to survey underwater critical infrastructure during peacetime, then sabotage in conflict. In response to nefarious activity by Russian GUGI submarines and an Akula Class submarine, the Defence Secretary @JohnHealey_MP deployed our Armed Forces to track and deter any malign activity by these vessels. We worked in partnership with Norway and other allies responding to increased Russian activity in the Atlantic, north of the UK. A @RoyalNavy warship and @RoyalAirForce P-8 aircraft ensured the Russian submarines were monitored 24/7. The Akula Submarine subsequently retreated home having been closely tracked throughout and we continued to monitor the two GUGI submarines, in and around wider UK waters. Our Armed Forces left them with no doubt that they were being monitored, that their movements were not covert as Putin planned and that their attempted secret operations had been exposed.

I think it would create some vulnerabilities that are hard to counter and would be problematic if picked at. They would need to be fibre optic to nullify jamming for instance, and I'm not sure if they could carry enough to do the same job as a mortar. I'd probably look for a loitering munition complement to the mortars, best of both worlds.

@Sam_Cranny @thinkdefence Ack. I'm not thinking about general warfighting, but in a LAF context. You're jumping in, c.200 strong and self supported for 48hrs. Would you take the standard compliment of tubes and ammo, or trade some all out for drones?

@thinkdefence @Thumbofkong Ukraine and Russia use both, often sequencing them - they don't see them as one or the other, but complementary. Protection is important, but it might take longer to set up than they would like. So, balance is needed

@Thumbofkong That's an interesting question, but not sure i am qualified to answer. Would be good to do a test though?

@thinkdefence Why aren't the hulls and turret structures made in the UK? The history there (having read your post on it) sounds quite interesting and instructive for the current state of things.

Am looking for a set of section headings and questions to address in a post about Ajax. I have all the history, but what about the questions and observations. Over to you!

According to Wikipedia, this is what the UK deployed during Operation Ellamy - the Libya campaign in 2011. Could the services pull something similar together today? Presumably the carriers would mean fewer strike aircraft ferrying to-and-from the UK. But the enablers?

@PeterEl24449654 @TBrit90 Yeah this seems significant, I think the E-3s were managing air ops for multiple countries in 2011. Hundreds of sorties per day
