@Sam98103202 @SAcerton @L0m3z @lymanstoneky You're projecting. Most women aren't girl boss types trying to be a man in a dress. They are happiest raising a family and making a community - areas where they are far superior to men. Also, the idea that women had no agency/power in the past is feminist nonsense.

@SchnapsideeG @SAcerton @L0m3z @lymanstoneky Most women aren't conservative, religious and willing to be a subservient homemaker though. Or did you mean most amish/most fundies? Most women wouldn't be happy with your 'nice society', as the 1920s weren't great for women. Too restrictive and degrading

Great conversation with demographer @lymanstoneky about global fertility collapse, why it matters (does it actually?), what’s causing it, and what we might do about it, including some final thoughts on forced breeding programs. Trailer here. Full link in reply.

@aaron_a_t @imetatronink Yes, assuming. Trump hasn't agreed to lifting the sanctions yet. He will be talking about sanction relief. I suspect that he will lift them, but we don't know yet.

‼️🏳️ Terms of Surrender Trump threatened civilizational destruction. Iran replied with Terms of Surrender. Trump says the Terms of Surrender are a good basis for negotiations. Iran announces US acceptance of the Terms of Surrender and promptly fires more missiles at Israel. The stock market LOVES the Terms of Surrender. Iran remains the gatekeeper and toll booth of the Strait of Hormuz. The US continues to evacuate its Persian Gulf bases. This is what decisive strategic defeat looks like.

@ramzpaul Vance hated it so much that he took to the podium to publicly promote the war effort and parrot talking points.

@ramzpaul So we're supposed to believe that behind the scenes, Vance was pounding the table to stop the war, but publicly supported it anyway

@captive_dreamer What are you talking about? The Tucker crowd couldn't be happier. They (correctly) thought that this was a stupid war for Israel and a massive distraction from domestic issues, especially immigration. No, it's over. They're (correctly) happy.

@felinerespecter You guys are hilarious. Before the war, Iran - Didn't control the strait - Was subject to US sanctions - Surrounded by functioning US bases After the war, Iran - Will charge tolls to pass the strait - Will no longer have US sanctions - Surrounded by closed bases

@felinerespecter Well, he's not wrong about Israel/the Jewish Lobby being the crazy girlfriend who keeps getting us into fights. Your unwillingness to acknowledge this is just as bad as his warming up to Islam. We can live w/o crazy Jews and Muslims.

My colleague Jonathan Schulz has a piece just out at Journal of Political Economy showing that cultural diversity boosts innovation. Using surnames and their composition (by linguistic distance), they find that rising diversity explains America's big innovation boost. Years ago, Leonard Dudley (my first EH prof at UdeM) compared ideas to states of matter. Solids don’t mix--orthodoxies just sit there. Gases mix effortlessly, but nothing sticks--lots of talk, little structure. Liquids sit in between: fluid enough to recombine, structured enough to crystallize into something usable. That middle state is where progress actually happens. And progress happens if more liquids are mixed. In his case, he was talking about the importance of language (something that is rarely discussed in economics -- but totally on point for someone who grew up or evolved in Quebec), but it applies to what Jonathan did. Also, on a related note, this is proof that GMU is the better place to be to do economics

@VincentGeloso @loving_kangan Institutions simply reflect the people. Just as there is no "magic dirt," there are no magic institutions. The reason that the US had strong institutions is b/c they reflected the values of Anglo-American men, which, of course, derives from their biology.

@loving_kangan Because "diversity" is not a sufficient condition. Good institutions help. The USA, with strong property rights has that. Since property rights are pretty much the same all over the USA, variations in diversity will capture innovation in the gradient with it.

@glcarlstrom @SiaKordestani They haven’t agreed to anything beyond a ceasefire and opening Hormuz. Reaching a full deal will be hard, and the ceasefire may need to be extended for a long time. Trump will not go back to the war, though. He paid a heavy political price and is happy this conflict has ended.

@LukeGromen Have the Israelis - and, more importantly, the Jewish Lobby in the US - signed off on this? If Trump agrees to a deal over the objections of Israel and the Jewish Lobby, it will mark a seismic shift in DC, not seen since the end of the Cold War.

@Scocar45 @LukeGromen Sure, we do. The problem is trusting Trump and his crazy girlfriend Israel. Granted, even Trump seems to know that this war is lost. Israel, however, knows that this is its last chance, so it will do everything it can to blow up this ceasefire.

@LukeGromen Negotiations that are not direct with the theocracy of Iran are pointless. The West pointedly ignores that Iran has a completely different structure to their nation state than Western nations. The democratic arm is only a puppet to its theocracy. This is the same old shit.

@SantiagoAuFund Only the US can completely lose a war - and, yet, someone come out way ahead. 1. World will look to US & US-controlled countries for energy as ME is too unreliable 2. US will likely pull back from detrimental presence in ME 3. US may distance itself from its crazy girlfriend
