Submitted by Joel Wallskog, this marks an important step toward clinical recognition, accurate documentation, and future research. BREAKING: The Italia police officer Luciano Masini has been found not guilty of using “excessive force” by shooting an Egyptian illegal migrant dead for lunging at him with a knife after earlier having stabbed 4 people in a random attack. The attack took place on New Year’s Eve 2024 near Rimini Rimini. 23-year-old Mohammad Sittan was an Egyptian boat migrant who arrived illegally in Italy in 2022 only to later obtain international protection (refugee status), and was living on welfare money. Mohammed went on a random stabbing spree, seriously injuring four people (including a young woman and an elderly tourist couple) with a 22 cm kitchen knife. He shouted about Allah during the attack and a pocket-sized Koran was later found on him. Officer Masini fired multiple shots, including a couple of warning shots to the ground, hitting Sitta fatally. Investigations treated it as a potential terrorist act initially (due to the random nature, religious items, and possible radicalization indicators), but later focused more on mental health issues as Sitta had seen a psychologist. Officer Masini was l investigated for “excessive defense” but judge Ceccarelli has now archived the case, ruling the officer’s actions lawful and justified in self-defense. A political debate has now started in Italy, with Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi citing it as inspiration for reforms easing scrutiny on police in such incidents.
