This was fun. @wolftivy is a gentleman; identified similarities, distinguished b/w, and discussed the two sides -- Land vs LW -- well, in a way I haven’t seen anywhere else. It’ll be fun to hear Land vs. LW vs. Negarestani framed this way.
The Students@0xthestudents

Meltdown! The AI safety cult has spent 20 years trying to cage God. @wolftivy and @dcposch contend that the real task is humbler. We must become stewards and set the example for our successors, creating the conditions for their flourishing. A discussion of @xenocosmography 's prophetic 1994 essay.

in another news, ludwig is joining us on ground zero podcast soon. the internet has created a new kind of engineer - self taught, taste driven and adversarial to credentials. i believe ludwig is a case study of that archetype. drop your questions for him around the concept of intelligence, morphogenesis, understanding systems or ai in general.

it’s striking that apart from the strangest music, such as superliminal bunker ambience or slayyyter or paranormal-industrial-mongolian-ambient-dance-post-metal-wave etc., the most moving music is still religious music, gives very sincere hormonal. good for exposure therapy, if nothing else. remember, it is possible to have unlimited increases in beauty. take the most beautiful moment of your life, and the most beauty you can conceive of experiencing, and imagine that that is negligible.

Why does this character look AI-generated? Is it me or did I miss something? And why attack Isaac Newton with a lie, pray tell? Newton believed in God. In his mind, scientific research was a way to peer into the mind of God. So what? What makes you people superior? The last I checked, you sci-fi fruitcakes believe that machines can be conscious. Some of you believe that Claude is already conscious. 😀 Dear Lord. 🤦‍♂️
Dwarkesh Patel@dwarkesh_sp

It is extremely hard for most people to accept that they're living through an unprecedented period of change, even when the evidence is clear. When Isaac Newton analysed the society around him, he noticed that there were rapid advances being made all the time. But he couldn't believe it was real progress. Instead he argued that the world must be regularly destroyed and re-created, and his contemporaries were just rediscovering old stuff. This was more plausible to him than the idea that progress might be real!

i was typing up a huge thing about what sets me off about this video, but a lot of cool people have already done it, so i'll just chime in with: whoever truly divines subquadratic attention would be a little more excited about the disovery than this deadpan HR face.
Alexander Whedon@alex_whedon

Introducing SubQ - a major breakthrough in LLM intelligence. It is the first model built on a fully sub-quadratic sparse-attention architecture (SSA), And the first frontier model with a 12 million token context window which is: - 52x faster than FlashAttention at 1MM tokens - Less than 5% the cost of Opus Transformer-based LLMs waste compute by processing every possible relationship between words (standard attention). Only a small fraction actually matter. @subquadratic finds and focuses only on the ones that do. That's nearly 1,000x less compute and a new way for LLMs to scale.

daniel gross (re)deriving nick land from scratch at stripe sessions: “The best reference point I have for the singularity is the last time we connected a lower cost superintelligence to the global economy. And I’d say that that's roughly when China started modernizing and then joined the World Trade Organization. And you can kind of think of China as a kind of a superintelligence”
