“War is bad” Ok I’m with you “This war primarily benefits another country at great expense to national treasury and is a danger in spinning out of control.” Yeah I can see that. “And that other country killed Charlie Kirk.” What… “And his wife trafficked children for Epstein.” Huh? “And Epstein worked for that country to black mail every world leader into doing its bidding using baby rape” Ok you’re all retarded. “You’re Jewish”

@memeticsisyphus “I’m going to quote this hypothetical about Jesus Christ getting destroyed by ghengis khan completely unprompted while smirking because America needs to reassert itself in this war and abroad” whatever anyone’s opinion of this whole thing is that’s a really odd thing to say.

Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale apparently still believes the Minab elementary school was hit by a "failed Iranian missile," a belief that is not supported by *any accounts*

@Destiny_Chiild @aidnmclaughlin We live in a country where we can and should denounce America when it makes a mistake. I dont think we meant to kill nearly 200 school-aged girls but we definitely should hold our government which has a monopoly on violence to high standards.

@Destiny_Chiild @aidnmclaughlin Yeah. Everyone on the planet should be able to easily denounce America. It’s the prime source of evil and child killing in the world. An absolutely reprehensible entity

@emeriticus This is also precisely what makes David Lindsay the superior gnostic, because he denies love as just another illusion that drives men mad.

imo I think that while McCarthy was pessimistic about our fate as a species, he maybe believed love is a protective, redemptive, and regenerative force, and the only hope for individuals to save themselves and each other. I don’t know why else he’d write The Road
Christopher D. White@ZanderKelly30

@emeriticus it's hard to know this until you become a parent. Then Cormac's theme in The Road more or less hits you like a ten-pound bag of wet concrete. Sort of a sword from the stone moment at that

Trump said at the time that he ended up leaving troops in Syria specifically to "take the oil." Among those troops was Joe Kent's wife, who was killed in 2019; now he claims his wife was left in Syria because of Israel, not because of Trump's clearly-articulated plunder doctrine
Michael Tracey@mtracey

Given that Syria is back in the news, it might've been a good idea for someone to ask Trump at some point in the 2024 campaign if he still holds to the view that US troops should remain indefinitely in Syria to plunder the country's natural resources

@gorps7 @psychotakes @PannonianMantis I mean ffs. Think. Anyone can tell you "don't commit murder." On its own, how much power or significance does it have. The dhammapada more often says "if this happens, then that happens. This leads to liberation, that to suffering." It's explaining an entire framework.

@gorps7 @psychotakes @PannonianMantis It is also a general outlook and assessment of reality. The dhammapada is definitely not just a list of dos and don'ts. It's a book that begins with the sentence "mind precedes all things." This is not a command but a statement about the nature of reality. A dogma.

@GroovySciFi There’s a few weirdos online who do it but Buddhism never had the same impact on our region the same way Zoroastrianism had on Iran. Buddhism itself doesn’t originate from our lands which at least the Zoroastrian larpers can say for Zoroastrianism

There's an argument called "Pascal's Wager" which dictates it's better to be a believer and wrong than it is to be an atheist and be wrong. Making faith the logical choice. To that end, I would like to propose a similar wager which in similar fashion dictates that it's alot safer to conduct any conflict with any group without claiming to be superior to them. Since if you lose...

@psychotakes @PannonianMantis Buddhism does not talk about world peace. That is not in the dhammapada at least. The idea of universal liberation is more mahayana, but it isn't like, say, Tikkun Olam or whatever. A primary goal is acceptance and understanding why your suffering is largely self-inflicted.

@Trogool @PannonianMantis It’s more of a bunch of ritual traditions wrapped up in very attractive, fantastical platitudes of world peace and escaping reality and “liberating” every sentient being in existence into Buddhahood, blah blah blah. It has little more to it than that.

@psychotakes @PannonianMantis I disagree and I genuinely don't know about that other part you are talking about. Buddhism is defined by its teachings such as anatman and interdependent arising which all have a very practical dimension.

@Trogool @PannonianMantis It has nothing to actually teach or prove. You can see this in many ways, such as how Buddhists have constantly bragged for the last 20-30 years about how much knowledge they’re gonna give to neuropsychologists and quantum physicists, which all never actually results in anything.

@gorps7 @psychotakes @PannonianMantis I have read the dhammapada, some discourses, and books about buddhism. I am just saying that, while mental health is certainly a factor, I wouldn't reduce it simply to that.
