@JoshBeckerSV @PatrickAhrens1 @AsmMarcBerman @margaretabekoga @TyeGregory @CityofCampbell @MattMahanSJ @SusanEllenberg @AsmGailPellerin @RajSalwan The importance of the Matzah is introduced by @Sangi_shankar21 of @HinduAmerican

🚨 Breaking: The NYC Council voted to pass the synagogue protection bill with a veto-proof majority of 44 of 51 members. The bill to create a buffer zone for protests outside educational centers also passed, but only by a 30–19 margin — Mamdani could veto it if he chooses.

UPDATE: SAN JOSE CITY COUNCIL UNANIMOUSLY REJECTS ISRAEL DIVESTMENT ATTEMPT Today, during a routine annual review of the City of San José’s investment policy, the City Council unanimously rejected calls to divest from companies “providing services to the State of Israel in its ongoing conflict in Gaza.” Such a proposal would have conflicted with the city’s longstanding commitment not to legislate foreign affairs. We are grateful to Councilmembers Peter Ortiz and @KameiRosemary for their leadership in rejecting the inclusion of foreign affairs as a factor in the city’s investment strategy. We also thank Councilmembers @GeorgeCaseySJ, Michael Mulcahy, and @D4SanJose who spoke out in favor of keeping the policy domestically focused. The decision not to insert international affairs into the city’s investment policy represents a significant win for the residents of San José. It ensures that the city’s standards remain focused, constructive, and less divisive. Most importantly, it will support the overall wellbeing of the city's diverse community. JCRC Bay Area supports objective, value-based investment policies. However, actions that single out Israel unfairly stigmatize Jewish constituents and run counter to San José’s commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and vibrant community for all. Today’s outcome also represents another clear rejection of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. Activists' offensive attempts to conflate Israel with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) totally fell flat. We commend the Council for recognizing the specious, hollow nature of these efforts, which do nothing to meaningfully support the people of Gaza. Finally, we extend our sincere appreciation to the many Jewish community members and organizations that mobilized on less than 24 hours’ notice, sending hundreds of letters and showing up in person to provide public comment. We are grateful for the partnership of the Bay Area Jewish Coalition and Jewish Silicon Valley in this effort.

AB 715 was passed unanimously to protect California's Jewish students. Now, a new bill (AB 2159) would roll those protections back, backed by the same groups that opposed AB 715 from the start. Here’s what it would do: ❌ Remove key guidance used to identify antisemitism ❌ Strip safeguards against bias in classrooms ❌ Eliminate professional standards for instruction ❌ Demote the state’s Antisemitism Prevention Coordinator — while leaving other discrimination coordinators untouched At a time when antisemitic incidents continue to rise, California must strengthen, not weaken, its commitment to protecting Jewish students. We must defend AB 715. 🚨 Take 30 seconds to act: tinyurl.com/WithdrawAB2159 Tell Assemblymember Garcia: Withdraw AB 2159.

REPORT OF ACTIVE SHOOTER AT DETROIT SYNAGOGUE 🔴 Massive Police presence 👇🏻

JCRC is aware of a disturbing incident at Santana Row in San Jose in which two Israeli Americans were brutally attacked while speaking Hebrew. After arriving at a restaurant, they were approached by three unknown individuals and punched multiple times, leaving one victim briefly unconscious. Both victims were transported to the emergency room and later released. The San Jose Police Department is investigating the incident as a hate crime. We are in close communication with our partners at Jewish Silicon Valley, as well as local elected officials, law enforcement, and community leaders. We will share additional information as it becomes available.

Jewish California met with senior Newsom Administration officials yesterday to convey our community's confusion and concern about his recent comments on Israel – and to request clarification. Our statement:

Mayor Daniel Lurie is not particularly helping San Francisco’s image at the moment, as he posted a false claim that SF protesters were chanting “Tax the Jews” at a Wednesday event, even though video evidence proves it was just one lone kook passing by. buff.ly/jlCS8e1

At an event this afternoon, a group of individuals that were chanting "tax the rich" began to shout "tax the Jews." This was an event I put on with Supervisor Mahmood, labor leaders, and dozens of workers to announce a plan that creates more jobs for those workers and housing for San Franciscans. Suggesting that Jews are wealthy is a tired trope, and targeting our community at an event focused on creating economic opportunity for San Franciscans is decidedly antisemitic. I will never accept hate directed at the Jewish community or any community in our city. Those are not San Francisco values—we’re better than that.

JPAC is now JEWISH CALIFORNIA – Our Voice in Sacramento. For more than 50 years, we’ve brought Jewish community institutions together to advocate statewide for safety, dignity, and shared values. As antisemitism and hate rise, Jewish organizations face increased threats, and the services that support our most vulnerable neighbors are increasingly at risk. In this moment, clarity about who we are and how we show up has never mattered more. JEWISH CALIFORNIA reflects who we are today: the nation’s largest statewide coalition of Jewish organizations, speaking with one unified voice. We’re proud to enter this next chapter. When I sought to amend a Gaza ceasefire resolution in January 2024 to explicitly condemn Hamas’ weaponization of rape and sexual violence, the @AROCBayArea and CAIR mob shouted it down as a lie. It was all true. And it was even worse than we knew then. (1/4)
