@speedfox_uk @JaroslavH @apsamuelson @blagden_david We are expensive because we tend to have a lot of staff time supervising labs. In my institution, CS literally has 3x contact hours than an average English programme or similar. Also we do need large labs full of expensive computers, but that isn't /too/ bad.

@JaroslavH @apsamuelson @blagden_david I understand physics, med and chem being expensive, but CS? I would have thought that would have been about as expensive to teach as maths.

@EdConwaySky @SMMT So at an average of £115,000 , in the original article, that’s less than 400 cars, let’s assume 50% were for the home market - so probably under 200 cars to Russia is hardly worth the dramatic headlines - cheers

NEW Britain's motoring lobby group the @SMMT has insisted that an unprecedented 2,000% increase in car exports to Azerbaijan has NOTHING to with Russia and is explained by the fact that this former Soviet state is a “flourishing market in its own right”. This is rather... odd 🧵

There is no exemption for education/research - this means that brightest foreign researchers can no longer be brought to UK as postdocs (average salary 30-36K), presumably? This is unspeakably damaging to UK's standing as a world research centre. @UniversitiesUK @BritishAcademy_

Update, they don't care. If your delivery is over an hour late and it is 9pm, tough shit. Modern capitalism is when corporations realise that reputation literally doesn't matter any more I suppose.

.@JustEatUK Can you please help get this sorted? A restaurant was well over an hour late with no update or "we're cooking" message, so I placed a different order elsewhere and your email support are saying I still have to pay. Obviously that isn't your intent, but aren't budging.

@spectate_or @professor_dave And it never has done. This poster is nothing more than dogwhistling towards a putsch that they don't dare articulate. You seem to think this about "gender quotas" whereas others think it is about trans people, because it is /actually/ about nothing.

I have worked hard to make science more inclusive. Science needs diverse researchers with varied interests & skills, and should apply itself to solving diverse global problems. As far as I'm concerned, if the government wants to 'kick out the woke', they'll need to sack me.

@BiJocular @leecronin @Conservatives @michelledonelan We know what it means. Nothing. If they wanted to *do* something they would say it, but they are aware they can't 'cancel' science, so they put out this crap knowing that it will whisper anti-Trans notions without promising anything. And the reactionaries won't notice the switch.

@duckduckgeese @charts_finance @friscolive415 @Cruise More capable than humans is both easy, and not enough. If a human messes up there is a court case, blame. For a machine to have the power of life and death it needs to be beyond reproach. The barrier is far higher. Or, the executives need to be responsible for autocar deaths ;)

😬 @Cruise self-driving operations had a complete meltdown earlier in North Beach. We overheard on the scanner that all Cruise vehicle agents were tied up at the time (not literally) and so North Beach was going to get a delayed response. But wow, WTF!

@sgaduuw @dmimno "A week" in an undergraduate course doesn't mean 38 hours, it means "this takes up the 2 hour lab session that week". Complete newbies to programming will indeed take a few hours to get used to something. (That said there are decent solutions to python deps)

@dmimno What platform are you teaching on? A week sounds like a lot. I've exclusively developed using numpy/pandas in a docker container, and never spent more time on these beyond adding them to my requirements file

There was a tweet yesterday about how major python libraries mostly aren't written in python, and it implied that this was something that should be fixed. I take it as revealed preference: experts don't like working in python. It's also a terrible language for beginners.

@TorstenBell We've had a decade of cheap money, but it wasn't used for investment. Why is that? Per Sowell's "scarce resources with competing uses" argument: Where did the cheap money go?

@ClaraRo55 @ucu I just mean that even if this is the best that we get, it is still better than the zero that we get without unionising. You asked what is the point of the union, and it's that.
