@stevefaulkner Yes - it’s a reasonable adjustment that we can anticipate (required under UK Equality Act), it’s used by 35%+ of app users & it’s a requirement of accessibility standards - EN 301 549. But UI still needs to be operable so design how UI will respond at x2 zoom.

@brucel @zcorpan Generally advise placing focus on the main heading at the top of the new page content. Even better can be to place it on a visually hidden element before the heading to describe the page purpose ie like a browser title. No live region required making for a more reliable solution

@equalsShaun I’ve found stammeringlaw.org.uk really useful to understand law and past cases. Equality Act cases usually go to county court first so aren’t made public by default.

@accessibleweb @alastc @abbott567 I also recommend selecting at least 2 options on accessibility shortcut so the menu pops up. Then VoiceOver doesn’t get automatically turned on/off plus highlights other options to test with You can also disable the 5 clicks - search for emergency in settings

@alastc @abbott567 I was driving my brother in his car, and wedged my phone in the cup holder. Short distance down the road the pressure on the power button meant it had called the emergency services and my brother had to give all his details to confirm it wasn't a hoax.

Accessibility tip for today. If you’re trying to learn Voiceover on iOS, configure your triple tap ‘accessibility shortcut’ to turn it on and off. When it’s on, your iPhone won’t use standard gestures and that can be daunting. The triple press is your kill switch. #a11y

A reminder of the choices that global society has to make about the climate: Delaying action on reducing emissions commits the world to live with severe consequences. Rapid action now means a more habitable world for all. There is no going back. Choose wisely.

@pauljadam @alastc UK Equality Act required that service providers anticipate people with disabilities need reasonable adjustments to remove anything more than trivial disadvantages. WCAG is best guide of reasonable but we may need to go further if evidence shows it’s needed eg plain language

@abijames @alastc I've not heard of any laws about anticipating adjustments, WCAG is what becomes the legally required criteria to claim ADA compliance.

Is Visible Controls success criterion still happening in #WCAG22 or what? It seems to have halfway disappeared? The Understanding link is broken as well as the in-page link Here it does not work: #visible-controls" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">w3c.github.io/wcag/guideline… Here it works: #visible-controls" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">w3.org/TR/WCAG22/#vis#A11y #WCAG

@pauljadam @alastc Because the group could not resolve how to define a visual indicator. I hope the draft understanding document remains public to evidence user need & ways to support it. Will be helpful where the law is sites must anticipate adjustments needed rather than follow a tech standard

@alastc Do you know the reasoning why Visible Controls was removed? I don't agree with that decision based on the many barriers I've seen folks design using hover only controls.

To create inclusive and #accessible websites, particularly for to support #neurodiversty & people with cognitive disabilities, you need to look beyond technical standards like WCAG. Great article explaining how design decisions can cause pain, discomfort and anxiety for many

There are only enough hours in the day, but for some there are also only enough spoons. Find out what spoons—or a shortage of them—means in a digital context. New article by TPGi Accessibility Engineer Lē McNamara for your reading pleasure: tpgi.com/beyond-wcag-lo… #a11y
