Are electric cars actually cheaper to run than petrol ones? ⚡🚗 A Hyundai Kona petrol vs electric comparison looks at charging/fuel, insurance, depreciation, servicing & tax, so which really costs less?

@GerHerbert1 @libraryturner You suggest 120-140km range off the 3 hours charge at the low rate used in the calculations. I'd say a lot of people have a round commute of more than that. Even if they're close to it, range anxiety is certainly going to be a factor.

@arseagon @GerHerbert1 I live in rural galway and drive a Hyundai Kona. It’s extremely rare for me to use a public charger because I charge my car at home, while I’m asleep. Or on very sunny days, for free off my solar panels.

@GerHerbert1 You didn't offer the cost of running the car if using public chargers on the like for like comparison. That makes electric look better, therefore disingenuous.

@GerHerbert1 Nah, a disingenuous piece that deliberately left that out to suit. Anyone that doesn't live within the commuter belt is tied to at least partial public chargers which changes the calculations completely. Should have been considered to be a valid comparison.

@arseagon Just an issue of space, but the overall difference is included. All other variables remain the same, so it can be worked out. I did include a public charging table with the piece, along with all the calculations, but how much was included ultimately came down to space.

@adrianfclarke @Acrainseven I had a 2017 F Pace Diesel which I adored. Unfortunately reliability issues meant she left her turbo and most of the exhaust system on the motorway one cold evening. Jag paid for most of the repair bill but she never sounded the same and I got rid soon after that.

@Acrainseven I agree the F-Pace looks terrific, but is it right for Jaguar? BMW and Mercedes introduced theirs decades earlier and built plants in the US, where the main market was. Jaguar has never had anything like the same footprint (or aftersales support).

I don’t know Ian Callum. I was way below his pay grade and anyway at the time the Jaguar and Land Rover studios were still separate. However it’s clear on the run up to launch of the Type 00 he’s doing the media rounds bemoaning ‘what could have been’ - i.e. his next round of cars that were cancelled, and doing a bit of history rewriting. I saw all those proposals and it was all more of the same - there was nothing new (if you Google you can find images of the cancelled EV XJ). There was only one ‘new’ model proposal that was truly, truly stunning - and that never stood a chance. Say what you will about the Callum Jaguars (personally I think the X351 XJ of 2010 was incredible) but the bottom line is those cars were not selling. In their best of sales, 2018 Jaguar sold about 180k cars. That year BMW sold over 2 million.

@declanganley I've seen experts on mass transit saying electric busses are no greener than modern diesel ones due to the numbers carried to fuel burned ratio. It's nothing more than very expensive virtue signalling.

@Nick_Delehanty I house a Ukrainian family in my house, I don't intend to become a new landlord under the new rental laws so if this scheme isn't extended that family will be out on the street on 31st March. I'm sure others are in the same boat so time is needed to allow relocation.

Only in Ireland can something be phased out… by extending it for another year. "The scheme, which had been due to expire this month, will be extended once more to March 2027. Minister of State Colm Brophy said “the time for the scheme” is “coming to a conclusion”. "It is therefore my view that we will be extending the scheme, as indicated, for 12 months as part of a phasing-out process" lol Why can't the Govt just make decisions quickly... is that not the job?
