When Mamdani says he is committed to protecting “Jewish Americans” and “Jewish New Yorkers,” it’s hard to ignore the strong ideological signal being broadcast. American Jews refer to themselves as “American Jews” just like British Jews, Russian Jews and French Jews refer to themselves as such. We do that because we’re a people not just a faith or ethnic group. Mamdani knows it. He avoids saying “American Jews” because to do would be to acknowledge Jewish peoplehood which undermines his anti-Zionist belief system. Mamdani’s worldview can comfortably accommodate different faiths and ethnicities, but cannot tolerate Jewish peoplehood.
