This must stand as one of the most flagrantly stupid remarks ever made by a Canadian Prime Minister.
Everyone in politics says dumb things from time to time. I sure did.
The problem is that this dumb statement reflected government policy, based on an astonishing blend of energy, economic, and geopolitical illiteracy.
Mark Carney was elected on the premise of being literate on energy, the economy, and geopolitics.
On the promise of getting big things done “faster than ever,” of making Canada “an energy superpower,” of becoming the “fastest growing economy in the G7.”
So get on with it already.
Eastern Canadian provinces are increasingly positive on gas production and exports, eg Nova Scotia lifting its ridiculous gas production ban.
There is a growing shift back to energy realism in Quebec politics.
Enough consultations, meetings, and triangulating energy politics.
Embrace East Coast LNG as a moon shot project, with war time urgency.
Prove that Canada can once again do big things quickly, while making Canada wealthier, and helping the world achieve energy security.

@FoodProfessor I dislike Lutnik, have from the first time I saw his bombastic rhettoric on CNBC before the 2024 election. He is still as full of hot air, a true Trump sycophant. I don't believe that administration has any intention of renegotiate CUSMA. So Carney is smart to negotiate outside.

I’m no fan of Secretary Howard Lutnik, not even remotely.

Canadians can’t eat speeches. Empty rhetoric isn’t nutritious.
Food inflation in Canada is the highest in the G7.
Carney’s deficits are making the problem worse.
Conservatives are offering real solutions:
Cut the Liberal food packaging tax.
Cut the fuel standards tax that adds 17 cents/litre.
Cut the industrial carbon tax that drives up farm equipment and production costs.
And stabilize the Canadian dollar by getting back to balanced budgets and selling more Canadian oil and gas to the world.
Only Conservatives will stop the Liberal hidden food taxes.

After illegally and unconstitutionally striking Venezuela, Trump is now selling Venezuelan oil through a campaign donor, and funneling the proceeds to an offshore account in Qatar – creating a potential slush fund with no accountability, oversight, or guardrails for Trump and his allies.
His continued abuse of power doesn’t serve the Venezuelan people or the American people – and it certainly doesn’t lower costs for Americans.
This outrage is yet another example of his unchecked corruption as he again ignores laws and enriches his friends, donors, and himself.

Trump is raising tariffs on 8 NATO allies because they rightly support Denmark's sovereignty in Greenland.

He has gone too far.
Trump arbitrarily, without legal authority, imposes tariffs on longstanding allies to compel the annexation of an ally’s sovereign territory.
This cannot stand.
Europe and the UK should respond with strength and unity by imposing counter tariffs. And all of Denmark’s NATO allies, including Canada, should respond by contributing troops to the joint military exercises in Greenland.
The free world cannot abide economic warfare as a tool of territorial aggression.
If the response is weakness and disunity, he will exploit it.
A year ago he said that he would use “economic force” to “annex Canada.” He is now doing exactly that to annex a neighbouring ally.
We should respond with confidence that he is only about to get weaker. The US Supreme Court is very likely to overturn Trump’s emergency tariffs within days or weeks. And Trump is almost certain to lose control of Congress a year from now, effectively making him a lame duck.
If we do not act together to respond to this bullying, it will embolden him to go even further.
