I think that the ceasefire will barely happen, its an important thing to do for the stupid people politically(most people on this website), but the chance this occurs in reality for any period of time is limited. I'll be very surprised if it holds for any period of time. From a persuasion perspective, Trump is using their proposal (even if its their understanding that they are winning) to engage with any deal. He does this every time. Any time something is "impossible" the minute they put something down on the table, thats effectively the "price" and now we're just negotiating numbers. Comes from real estate but great psychology. Remember Iran thinks they are winning, so bridging this gap is difficult, but i'm also not doubting Trump on this.

Let's look at the record. Scheierman, Ashworth, Dix, Neal, Watson, Echenique, Gibbs, etc. vs. Owen Freeman, Manny Suarez???, Kelvin Jones???. Jones and Suarez weren't really being counted on to be major pieces, and even Freeman probably wouldn't have been a bust if he wouldn't have gotten hurt. I am honestly having troubles coming up with many big whiffs from Creighton in the transfer portal. Creighton historically has done an excellent job with the portal. I would expect that to continue.

There are risks with these deals for sure. But if you hit right, they are incredibly valuable. Obviously, PCA’s camp thought it was a fair deal, and took some risk off the table, or they wouldn’t have done it. On the flip side, the Cubs thought it was in their best interests to ink the deal or they wouldn’t have done it. They obviously think those two free agent years they bought out are going to be a bargain - or they would’ve just let him run through arbitration. At this point the Cubs have earned the benefit of the doubt IMO. They have shown to be pretty good at scouting their own team and have info and knowledge we don’t. They obviously thought the risk worth taking. I think they’ll be proven right, but ultimately only time will tell.

He was a 23 y/o kid in his 1st full season in the big leagues. You’re implying he will never improve. He’s shown an ability to adjust - especially during off seasons. Very rarely is development completely linear. Especially for someone with some swing and miss issues. He probably ultimately falls somewhere in between those two levels. Obviously you feel he is going to pretty much be the June-October player. I think he will be better than that. Maybe not the complete MVP level he showed, but at least a 110 OPS+ with potential for more. I’d say O/U on baseball-reference WAR over that period is 26-27 WAR. I’m taking the over - likely 10-20% or more over. You obviously feel it is under. But let me point out his 2024 when he played in only 123 games and had an OPS+ of 88, he was worth 2.3 WAR. Even if he is THAT 2024 player for 7 years, he’s at probably 20 WAR (when you factor in the increase in WAR from 145-155 games/yr.). I just don’t see him being a 12% below average hitter over the next 7 years. Stretches like that, probably. But over the course of entire years? Doubtful. It’s not hard to see him average only 1.0 offensive WAR/yr for the next 7 years - in which case he likely hits that O/U and is easily worth that contract.

Because you don’t get this deal in a year or two if he becomes what the Cubs obviously feel he can be. Plus, arb. numbers are going to keep rising. Just like everything else in life. The other thing to remember about this is that this goes beyond what he does on the baseball field. PCA is the Cubs most marketable player since probably Sammy Sosa. In terms of marketability, PCA is already a superstar. He is exciting, real, young, with a touch of edge and flair. Plus, he’s a great dude - especially with kids. Chicago’s little leagues are peppered with PCA jerseys. When I travel to other cities I almost always see a kid wearing PCA gear. He was probably the second most popular player last year in that Japan Cubs-Dodgers series behind only Ohtani. PCA is a marketing GOLD MINE! $$$$. Between his defense, baserunning, offensive potential, and marketing opportunities, there is limited downside to this deal IMO.
