The 2025 Federal AI Use Case Repository is out! See thousands of ways agencies are applying AI to improve operations and value to the taxpayer while increasing the quality of public services. I'll be highlighting my personal favorites, starting with a use case at @NASA demonstrating American leadership in AI innovation extends beyond the private sector.   NASA, in collaboration with @IBM, developed Surya, a first-of-its-kind model designed to analyze and forecast solar activity. Solar events impact a wide range of our essential technology, including GPS, satellite communications, power grids, and commercial aviation equipment. Accurate space weather forecasting is also crucial for human spaceflight, providing astronauts time to shelter from harmful radiation, adjust extravehicular activities, or shield sensitive electronics from overexposure.    By training on almost a decade’s worth of high-resolution data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory, Surya achieved a 16% improvement in solar flare classification and can visually forecast solar eruption locations up to two hours in advance, a significant improvement from traditional methods. Ultimately, Surya strengthens the nation’s ability to anticipate and respond, ensuring future human explorers can safely inhabit environments far beyond Earth’s magnetic protection.   Consistent with NASA and the U.S. government’s commitment to open science, Surya was released as open source to accelerate collaboration and innovation across the research community.   To learn more about this use case, visit lnkd.in/eKU7wnmu. HHS has replaced a legacy COBOL-based payroll system with a secure, cloud-based platform — addressing rising operational complexity and maintenance costs associated with outdated systems that were costly, fragile, and difficult to sustain. In line with @USOPM's initiative to modernize, tasks that once required up to six hours of manual effort are now completed in minutes through automation, improving speed, accuracy, and reliability.
