Apparently, the arrangement included Pakistan’s willingness to nominate Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, a transactional gesture that speaks for itself. No prizes for guessing who this lobbyist is. Many in India have admired him, hosted him, and believed his narrative of ‘peace and people-to-people contact.’ Such overtures from Pakistanis raised on high doses of Hinduphobia can never be about peace; there are always hidden motives. Those who trusted him should now understand why taking Pakistani assurances at face value is always a mistake. Many of us, at some point, have erred in doing so, believing in words that were never meant to be kept. But there is a reason why many of those in India who once spoke the loudest about peace and dialogue with Pakistan have grown disillusioned over the years. It is not hawkishness, as the so-called Pakistani liberals would call it. It is experience talking. They have learned, as we all eventually do, that peace with Pakistan is only an illusion, one that collapses under the weight of Pakistan’s very foundations, which were laid on exclusion, denial, and religious hatred for Hindus.
