I support ineffective altruism bc effective altruism makes the world a better place, and if the world is a better place you benefit from that, which is not very altruistic of you is it? it would clearly be more virtuous if you altruism was well meaning but made everything worse.
florence ⏹️@morallawwithin

Why would anyone disagree with effective altruism? What, do they support ineffective altruism?

@seashell_luvr I think I agree with you and it’s why I find the level of poly hate I see in here a little ridiculous. clearly there are a lot people in monogamous relationships simply as that is what they feel they are ‘supposed’ to say but w/o really being personally committed to it.

I believe in monogamy, and I would only enter a romantic/sexual relationship if I am called to monogamy, but I think religion and tradition tends to put the cart before the horse. It prescribes monogamy as a rule to follow, rather than describing it as a state, something that naturally emerges from a deeper level of union. Monogamy may reflect a more integrated or even divine form of relationship, but it can’t be manufactured through obligation or adherence alone. When people try to live it out before they’re actually aligned with it internally, it becomes performative and devoid of blood. And when this happens, it doesn’t produce integrity. It creates tension, suppression, and sometimes even deception, because the inner reality hasn’t caught up.
Camus@newstart_2024

Our species norm is polygyny: 80% of cultures historically let high-status men hoard wives while low-status men get nothing. Christianity (inherited from Rome) forced monogamy for 2000 years. Now we've mostly ditched it—and we're sliding back toward the old pattern. Louise Perry: Lifting the monogamous restriction produces worse outcomes—higher crime, domestic violence, economic inequality. Monogamy is better for women and low-status men. Monogamy isn't "natural"—it's an engineered cultural upgrade that tamed inequality and violence. Do you think monogamy is worth defending even if it's not the "default" human pattern? Or are we better off returning to the species norm? Your take 👇

@dhaaruni @zacharywefel Oh he blocks everyone for anything. didn’t even reply to him or tag him or tweet about him on main and still somehow ended up in his block list after I’d put him on mute. Only found out when someone retweeted him months later and I saw I couldn’t reply. Lmao

There has to be a middle ground between fixating on being as hot and thin as humanly possible (like the QT'd article advises) and channeling your inner Menswear guy (who has me blocked) and declaring that it's reactionary to prioritize fitness over personal style-maxxing.

@sirsfurther private detective seems incongruent here. But putting both novelist and journalist seems to suggest they are a writer!

my wife is a whore, a slattern, an immoral slut tainted with seed from multiple men before she met me. But luckily Jesus still loves her, and so do I. Yes, I am the pure and virginal one in our relationship - out of choice not bc I am a weird freak btw - and I changed her!!
Trevor Sheatz@TrevorSheatz

My wife was formerly promiscuous. I was a virgin. She was then radically born-again. Committed to church, evangelized constantly, Puritan books in her bedroom, prayer journals, grief over past sexual sin, etc. We got to know each other well for over a year, dated for four months, engaged for two and a half, and didn't sin sexually with one another. Our first kiss with each other was at the altar on our wedding day (reaction pic attached!). We've been married for over five years now, and she's been the most wonderful and godly wife, mother to our three children, and homemaker you could imagine. She's more pure than most virgins, as biblical purity has less to with past sins (though they certainly matter) and more to do with one's current posture of the heart and daily decisions to honor the Lord (Matt. 5:8). We're far too quick to forget the story of the woman labeled as a known "sinner" (likely a prostitute) in Luke 7:36-50 who was washing Jesus' feet with her tears while kissing them too. The Pharisees were shocked that Jesus let a public sinner do this. Jesus responded with a parable about debts being forgiven and ended with this powerful conclusion: "Her many sins have been forgiven; that’s why she loved much. But the one who is forgiven little, loves little" (Luke 7:47). Everyone seems to highlight the benefits of virginity, and it certainly is a blessing. But we forget to highlight the benefits of being forgiven much as well. My wife knows the depths of Jesus' forgiveness more than most people, enabling her to more easily live out a life of passionate love for her Savior. A woman or man's past sexual sin matters. But what matters far more when it comes to deciding who to marry is if the person is truly born again, if their repentance is real, if they truly have a heart for Christ, if they truly follow Jesus and obey his commands. "God has chosen what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen what is weak in the world to shame the strong. God has chosen what is insignificant and despised in the world — what is viewed as nothing — to bring to nothing what is viewed as something, so that no one may boast in his presence. It is from him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became wisdom from God for us — our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption, — in order that, as it is written: 'Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.'" (1 Cor. 1:27-31) "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!" (2 Cor. 5:17)

@JustBotBecky This speech was so stupid tbh. The people who were downtrodden in the Barbie world were the Ken’s, that was the whole point. So why is she giving this speech to the Barbie’s and how can any of them even relate to it? It goes against the whole thesis of the movie!!

Nominated. But the dialogue goes for men too, "men must take charge, but not too much or it's considered controlling" "men must be strong and collected but then they are considered emotionally unavailable" There are things men can't be or do because then it's "toxic masculinity" but when it's women who are or do things, it's empowerment. But the difference between these is that you can talk about women having to deal with impossible expectations but not about men having to deal with impossible expectations. If you try to, people try to make it about women or downplay it for men.

The fact Ryan Gosling got an award for his performance as Ken over THIS?!?!

As a man, if you want to ask women (or frankly anyone) to help solicit you a date you do need to do that through people that already know you and feel comfortable that you are not a creep!! That’s basics, come on now.

They’re not going to announce in the town square “This church has a lot of single ladies” bc that’s declaring open season for creeps to attend! But if you do attend and get to know them you’d probably get a different response you know.
Mack@kenzietuff

Man posts in local Facebook group, moving to area. Asks which Catholic parishes have thriving community, would be best for single man to attend- “is successful + seeking wife soon” + same faith is priority. Entire comment section berating him. “Church isn’t for dating!”

@BALUCIAGA She isn’t right. As you can see for yourself the map on the right with equal areas is shit and useless. Mercator projection otoh is extremely useful for navigation purposes bc it preserves the bearing (direction of travel) between two points. Other projections exist as well!

Jim Hacker: Humphrey, we have to do something about Iran. Sir Humphrey Appleby: Prime Minister, the government is already doing a great deal. Jim Hacker: Such as? Sir Humphrey Appleby: Monitoring developments, coordinating with allies, reviewing contingency plans and expressing concern. Jim Hacker: That all sounds like nothing, Humphrey. Sir Humphrey Appleby: On the contrary, Prime Minister. In diplomacy it is vital to appear active without becoming involved. Jim Hacker: The Americans are bombing things, the Iranians are firing missiles, the Strait of Hormuz is practically closed and we’re… appearing active? Sir Humphrey Appleby: Precisely. Jim Hacker: Innocent people are dying, Humphrey! Sir Humphrey Appleby: Yes, Prime Minister. That is why the Foreign Office is drafting a very strongly worded statement about it. Jim Hacker: A statement won’t stop a war. Sir Humphrey Appleby: No, Prime Minister, but it will ensure that we are on record as having been extremely concerned while it was happening. Bernard Woolley: If I may, Prime Minister — the Cabinet Office has identified six possible courses of action. Jim Hacker: Good! What are they? Bernard Woolley: We can condemn the escalation, call for restraint, urge negotiations, support our allies, assist defensive operations or participate directly. Jim Hacker: And what do they recommend? Sir Humphrey Appleby: Supporting our allies. Jim Hacker: That sounds suspiciously like participating. Sir Humphrey Appleby: Oh no, Prime Minister. Participating means fighting. Supporting merely means allowing others to fight from places that technically belong to us. Jim Hacker: Humphrey, if Iranian missiles hit one of our bases, we’ll be in the war anyway! Sir Humphrey Appleby: Yes, Prime Minister, but we shall have entered it with the invaluable diplomatic advantage of being surprised. Bernard Woolley: It’s generally considered the safest way to enter a war, Prime Minister. Jim Hacker: How on earth can that be safe? Sir Humphrey Appleby: Because if the war goes badly, we can say we never meant to join it. And if it goes well, we can say we were there all along.

@lachyolof @Bd_irB_ll but that’s exactly why it’s silly to abolish dropping down, for the fans and the spectacle of the thing you want to reward teams for achieving something with money AND a chance to win a trophy.

@henry_hill94 But the other teams in it were miles worse than most of these teams. It is a bit unbalanced, and you can tell that by the number of times the sole Italian and English reps have made the final. You basically only get good matchups when the 5 big 5 league teams meet.

This image alone demonstrates why creating the Conference League was such a brilliant idea. 8 quarter finalists from 8 different nations. Winning it will mean everything to the victorious fanbase. A rare W for one of footballs governing bodies.

I always say this - it’s very odd that the Brazilians of the 2000s get heralded as poster boys and inspirations and Neymar with a near identical career trajectory gets painted as some sort of style over substance player. Think it has to do with social media and nostalgia
Levi Ackermann@Emanxamilius_

The way British pundits talk about Neymar is nuts. I’m convinced they don’t rate Ronaldinho either but cos he embarrassed them at the WC & won the Balon d’or they have no choice but to respect him Neymar is in that echelon of player. Disrespecting him is just ridiculous

women look better with make-up. and I think that we should try to look our best, especially for the ones we love. at the same time, if I need to wear make-up every single day so that my boyfriend/husband likes me and treats me better, what the fuck are we even doing here?
