@CycleThom @janecoaston It was actually fun! Sprints/Jumps/Throws did a pentathlon competition (high jump, long jump, 60m low hurdles, shotput, 800 were the events)

most people cannot run a ten minute mile. if you can, it would take you about four and a half hours to run a marathon. that is an AMAZING athletic feat.
Daniel Jones@djones5194

@janecoaston Distance runners in general don't get anywhere near the respect they deserve. With sprinters, most people intuitively understand that they could not, in their dreams run as fast as them. But they see a distance runner run some time and think "I could approximate that."

@janecoaston And it's like "no, you can't." You can't run that far, even slowly. And you do not understand just how fast they're going over the course of that (mile/10k/half marathon/marathon/insert your pick of distance race).

@lxeagle17 Managing the emotions of that many people at the same time while hiding them from each other seems like it'd be freaking exhausting. That's a full time job

@Noahpinion As I think through my media consumption and the like...AI probably ends up more on the bad side than the good side way more often. In part because killing humans is bad, but destroying robots isn't considered killing, per se.

@Noahpinion I'd argue that AI is neutral (or really, both good and bad) in a lot of these. (e.g. Jarvis vs. Ultron). Arnold becomes good but Skynet is why humanity is pushed to the brink. Star Wars - there are good and bad droids, but way more bad droids.

I don't think this is true. In Star Wars, Star Trek, Marvel, etc., AI is on the side of the good guys. Even in Terminator 2, Arnold becomes humanity's protector. I don't think we should blame The Matrix for people's AI.
Joshua Achiam@jachiam0

The AI industry has largely failed to foresee the extremely foreseeable: most normal people think AI is scary because we had decades of science fiction about how scary AI is. We owe the public clear explanations of why we think this can be good and how to make it so.

@TheLastNeocon @NateSilver538 I guess. As a California voter, I'm glad she didn't run, personally. I actually think she's the classic case of everyone's second/third choice but I also recognize that if Democrats thought like me, things would look very different

@NateSilver538 Eh I normally agree with you but in this case I'm actually less than convinced. I see the argument though - name ID + divided field. But I've just seen her run two bad campaigns and don't understand what she offers that any other dem doesn't also.

@hotdamhistorian Tbf a chunk of folks going through college now genuinely didn't learn to read well due to the reading wars of the aughts. Was a paradigm changing revelation when I learned like 1/3 of kids were basically taught to guess words on the page

if you can't read 200-300 pages a week of fiction or nonfiction - then learn how to before/as you pursue a degree in the humanities/social sciences. being proud of not being able to read is not a fucking flex. yes your american public school education may have failed you....

@janecoaston I've generally found that bigger dog owners tend to be pretty good/considerate with how they handle their dogs, in large part because they have to be. Whereas small dog owners are just like "it can't hurt anyone!" and then tolerate extremely bad behavior.

I have a big dog and so this is a general rule for us (no one needs a cattle dog/Great Pyrenees mix in their lap at brunch) but this also has to go for small dog owners, they're still dogs even if they're small
Megan McArdle@asymmetricinfo

As a member of the dog person community, I am begging my fellow dog people to respect boundaries and not inflict your canines on people who don't want them, while at the same time begging non-dog-people to not begrudge us spaces where we can dog out.

@DougJBalloon @AsteadWH Feels like you're shooting the messenger. The concerns were real, reflected in polling, and then became obvious to those who denied the concerns at the worst time possible. Democrats shouldn't have been running an old man again.

Let’s make a Trump Free Space! Or at least try and think about politics (and the country) without him at the center. America, Actually — my new podcast about elections, voters, and the people/ideas charting our path to a post-Trump future — starts this Saturday!! In audio feeds and on @YouTube @voxdotcom

The answer will come in a piece later this week. Here's a hint: this group voted for Trump by more than 20% and now disapproves of him by a few percent. It is also over 20% of the electorate. And it was *not* a group that heavily swung to Trump in the last election.

There are 3 major demographic groups that have seen the largest and most pronounced swing away from Donald Trump, when comparing 2024 margins to current approval. I'll give you two: Hispanic voters and young voters. What is the third?

@Noahpinion Setting aside the Altman of it all, I've just generally found anthropic's product to be meaningfully better. I used to have subscriptions to both, and actually started with chatgpt, but there are no switching costs...
