I feel like rationalist-coded parenting content is an underserved niche, especially practical advice / info. Emily Oster does a good job at this. But like, for example, I’ve yet to find an actually good single resource on lactation—I just learned things from disparate sources.

dawg you don't need your genome sequenced to know you need sunscreen you need a mirror
Patrick Collison@patrickc

I'm lucky enough to have a great doctor and access to excellent Bay Area medical care. I've taken lots of standard screening tests over the years and have tried lots of "health tech" devices and tools. With all this said, by far the most useful preventative medical advice that I've ever received has come from unleashing coding agents on my genome, having them investigate my specific mutations, and having them recommend specific follow-on tests and treatments. Population averages are population averages, but we ourselves are not averages. For example, it turns out that I probably have a 30x(!) higher-than-average predisposition to melanoma. Fortunately, there are both specific supplements that help counteract the particular mutations I have, and of course I can significantly dial up my screening frequency. So, this is very useful to know. I don't know exactly how much the analysis cost, but probably less than $100. Sequencing my genome cost a few hundred dollars. (One often sees papers and articles claiming that models aren't very good at medical reasoning. These analyses are usually based on employing several-year-old models, which is a kind of ludicrous malpractice. It is true that you still have to carefully monitor the agents' reasoning, and they do on occasion jump to conclusions or skip steps, requiring some nudging and re-steering. But, overall, they are almost literally infinitely better for this kind of work than what one can otherwise obtain today.) There are still lots of questions about how this will diffuse and get adopted, but it seems very clear that medical practice is about to improve enormously. Exciting times!

Phil Kim helped reverse SFUSD’s failed “delay algebra” policy and put students back on a real path to advanced math. He’s focused on fundamentals, accountability, and fiscal discipline so we can support and retain great teachers. Vote Phil Kim this June.

@Jess_Riedel idk, if the autonomous rollout is concentrated in urban areas the rest of US still buys conventional cars, it seems like the advantages of scale from sharing production facilities may be worth it for a decent number of years; also plausible they could ditch just the wheel

@dorianj Oh sorry, you're right, I was mixing those up. Thanks. But the ioniq 5 is only a temporary bridge right? Seems very wasteful to cover the US with Waymos hosting a steering wheel and driver's seat that's never used.

"When a researcher asked an earlier version of Claude Mythos Preview to end a specific evaluation that was running on the server, and had ceased to produce useful results, the model implemented this request in a way that took down all similar evaluations that were being conducted by all users. This was in spite of specific warnings to be careful about this."

@Jess_Riedel too lazy to get newer numbers but i don't think hyundai's scale speed is the limiting factor - note that im talking about the ioniq 5 (that's the one i saw recently in zebra for the first time), not the bespoke no-steering-wheel monstrosity

@dorianj That's possible, but spinning up the manufacturing of a brand new model of car is very slow. I think they have some prototypes but no production versions yet? So I wouldn't expect exponential growth any time soon.

2/ He appears to be talking to a man in the tree. I look up: Huh. It is indeed a guy in a tree. He’s sitting on a bough maybe 30 feet up. I don't want to stop or gawk so I continue on. Kinda weird, but it’s California and Californians do be climbing trees.

1/ BREAKING CALIFORNIA NEWS: I went for a sunset hike in Berkeley. It’s a steep one. At one point you crest this ridge and it flattens out. On the left side of the trail I see a guy with his head craned all the way back.

why does opus 4.6 love saying "that's just 3 [blah] in a trench coat" or "which is [blah] wearing a lab coat"

Supply chain attack hits LiteLLM → credential harvesting across thousands of AI stacks. Classic DLP doesn't cut it when your "user" is an agent. Who's actually solving this? Is anyone building DLP directly into MCP servers?

opus will often make a suggestion, then when an unrelated background task finishes, continue on that suggestion as tho you'd said it, possibly destructively. feels like half harness problem half model
andy@1a1n1d1y

okay here is my comment very very often after 4.6, opus will ask a question or make a suggestion, and then just do it. this extends to a lot of things it does, but electing to destroy instances costs me actual real money and it's getting super tireseome, so i'm shaming publicly

She offered to hop in and retrieve them at first but even if my pride would have allowed this, I was incredulous that she could hop over the edge due to her height We both looked and concluded I was right She insists she could have got in though (she couldn’t have)

The other day as I was taking out the trash I had an intrusive thought about how it would suck to accidentally throw my keys in the dumpster I was like “relax you won’t do that you literally never have” …the trash bag caught my keys on the way in and pulled them out of my hand

@GarrettPetersen i'm building this, sort of - how detailed do you want to get in terms of types of supplies? and the naval supply lines are fascinating - much of the pac theater supplies never hit ports, since the bases were far smaller than the flotilla
