There was 60:40 a preference for West Coast broccoli when buyers did not know its source, but the preference is decidedly the opposite (70:30 for East Coast) when buyers knew the source of each variety.

A broccoli variety adapted to eastern North America was not on the to-do list for seed companies. The Eastern Broccoli Project changed that. After a considerable amount of work and collaboration, NorthStar has been released by @BejoSeeds. news.cornell.edu/stories/2025/0…

This research explains how fungicide-resistant alternaria blight was popping up in new places. It also provides the assay that allows seed companies to screen for the seedborne disease so that this is no longer a source of infestation. Tremendous work!

@Synergie16 @waitrose The uneven head is typical of harvesting a day or two too late or of having too-warm nights when the head first begins developing. The Eastern Broccoli project has worked with public and private breeders to develop new varieties that look better in stressful conditions.
