Growing up in the South.. I’ve seen grown men, that have been hunting, and shooting high powered rifle their whole lives. I’ve seen these same men, MISS deer inside 200 yards on nerves alone.. (broadside) Give this young man the same rifle, have him assemble the rifle on camera. Shoot a watermelon at 150 yards (or less) Then break the rifle back down. If he doesn’t do this as simply as riding a bike, there is an issue with saying he is our shooter. Looking at Tyler Robinson, something tells me he couldn’t do it.

people in these comments pointing to overall global declines in extreme poverty are mistaken because they are taking it as a whole instead of what it is - basically just China. China beat its poverty rate into the ground (going from 800m living in poverty to barely 10m), and because of its massive population, it accounts for 60-70% of the overall global decrease in poverty since the 80s. That had nothing to do with $99 computers and everything to do with the success of its own dramatic economic and social reforms. Outside of China... the absolute number of people living in poverty actually increased or remained stagnant. In Africa, for example, population growth is far outpacing any actual development. It went from having 250m people living in poverty in 1990 to now having over 433m in poverty.

As far as I know, there has never been a real postmortem on the whole "$99 computers will pull the Third World out of poverty" bit that pretty much everyone in tech treated as serious for at least a decade. It moved from WIRED covers, TED talks, and UN proclamations to silence.
