One of Netanyahu’s most reckless gambles was cultivating an image as the Israeli leader with unrivalled ties to Republicans. In doing so, he weakened Israel’s bipartisan support, courting conservatives while undermining Dem links. Now that Trump has turned on him, he is left is exposed.

For all that Trump’s done for Israel, if he contributes to Netanyahu’s defeat at the election, and the removal of this post-liberal/theocratic coalition, that will be his single greatest gift to our country.

@gobsmackled I think it's a mistake to assume he thinks like a businessman. Real businessmen make deals that benefit both parties, and stick to them. Trump is more like a predator, who just wants as much out of others as he can get.

Netanyahu's strategy of all but open partisanship in American politics might be semi-defensible if the Republicans were a normal party, but not when they're a personality cult built around Trump. The latter can never be counted on under any circumstances, as he should have known.

I have a feeling that the White House, having achieved peace in our time and rescued the Ayatollahs, will try and intervene on Putin’s behalf to stop Russia’s deteriorating position, just for shits and giggles.

As with everything he does, there is no institutional calculus. The possibility that Israel might be left weaker because of his actions never enters his megalomaniacal mind. He sees himself and the state as one and the same. The sooner he is gone, the better. Then the work of repair can begin.

Negotiate a good deal with Iran, for one

As an Israel supporter who feels vehemently anti-Trump these days, I never expected him to put Israel’s interests first. That’s not his job. But I did expect some skepticism toward Iranian lies, some concern for America’s Gulf allies, and some willingness to check Shia imperial ambitions. Instead, he’s folded faster than a cheap beach chair.

This is controversial, but it needs to be said: many Israelis are reacting to the US-Iran MOU with an unbelievable degree of immaturity. Trump is being portrayed as a traitor, a flip-flopper, a man who abandoned Israel. Newspapers are putting headlines on the front page about how he is no longer a friend. Journalists who proudly posted photos of themselves interviewing him are now putting Xs over those pictures. But let’s look at what actually happened: Trump went to war expecting a certain outcome and when that outcome did not materialize he made a decision to cut his losses and do what he believes serves America’s interests: to end the war now, under terms that many of us wish were stronger and more favorable. By the way, it was always obvious that the war had a narrow window and was not going to carry on into the summer with the World Cup and the 250th coming on July 4. Everyone is allowed to disagree with the deal and think it’s flawed (I definitely do). You can also argue that it leaves dangerous questions unanswered about uranium, missiles, and Iran’s support for terrorism. But Trump’s decision was never about Israel’s interests alone. It was about America’s interests. These critics need to get over the shock of what Trump did. Their problem was thinking (why, God only knows) that every decision Trump makes is guided primarily by what is best for Israel. What happened is something else - these people fundamentally misunderstood how the relationship with the US works. Now they have learned.

Trump is rattled by the reception his disastrous deal is getting. Keep the pressure on.
