I know my account has been WemVP central lately, but I'll tell you who I'm truly most impressed by this year besides Victor, and that's Mitch Johnson. He's answered the bell, man. Following in the footsteps of Coach Pop is not easy, and he's exceeding expectations. Some people have criticized him for not acting quicker at times, but I think his ability to show restraint and trust his team to figure things out when necessary is commendable. He reels them in when he needs to, and it's worked wonders for their growth during the season. He's doing a fantastic job.

"worst game of the year" is subjective and would take watching all 180 games back to determine between three candidates. A rough not great objective way is to look at the 10 worst "Game Scores" Think of it as "here's the floor" Here's those for three of the candidates:

@CollinReidPS So I will ask you the same. What would have been the minutes number that wemby needed to achieve toto be considered?

@heimer Minutes are not the entirety of my framework, but when you have two players who have ascended their teams to very similar heights, smaller factors start weighing more

If the MVP is “most valuable” then I think raw value provided DOES matter. Wemby’s minute deficit over the others hurts his “raw value provided” comparatively. I think the place I’ve landed for now is Shai is MVP Wemby provides the most value per minute played. The MVPPM lol

@CollinReidPS So what defines "raw value"? That is vague to me.

@heimer I’m talking about more than just box score. I think Wemby, even with the deficit, could surpass SGA. But, from start of season to end of season, despite his #2 ball handler being completely MIA and a ton of other injuries, he is leading his team to another 60 win season.

@TheTyJager Fewer minutes per game matter. You need a great team around you to thread water if you are absent from more minutes every game. Wemby has that team because of incredible draft lottery luck, so they can win a lot even with him being out more. Doesn't mean he isn't top-3 or top-4.

@HPbasketball I think Shai is going to win, but there’s a scenario Victor gets it. There’s a conversation now, and if Shai does get it, as a Spurs fan I wouldn’t be upset.

I will always say head to head is irrelevant, it just doesn't hold up if you think about it. However... Victor leads in net rating by 3.6 points. His team does literally win more than Shai's does when they're on the floor. That definitely matters to me.
Jason Williams@Metalchondria

@HPbasketball Getting the #1 seed after going 34 wins last season, passing by the defending champs beating them 4 out of the 5 regular season matchups, +17 net rating with Victor on the floor, 24/11/3/3 in 26 minutes a game? Absolute MVP

@HPbasketball Fair. Interesting on the number. I am honestly curious what drives that number for you. And is that a hard line or an ideal state? For example if a player averaged 32.9, are they out or are they just judged accordingly?

I think everyone has to answer that for themselves. I would probably think 68.75% which is 33 minutes per game should be a standard.
Heimer@heimer

@HPbasketball Some may feel that way but I'm not sure about many. I guess Im just trying to figure out what the cutoff is. Luka has played 150 more mins than SGA, so does that mean SGA isn't eligible? In addition, SGA averages 72% of a game. Wemby 60%. What is the needed % for him to hit?

I don't disagree. It matters. It's just interpretable HOW MUCH it matters. Oddly, many people from San Antonio don't feel it's important. Weird.
justin@ly_yng

@HPbasketball Shai and Jokic have both played 300 more minutes than Wemby. I know it's close, but actually being on the court is an important factor.

@BexarApparel Yes and no. It has always been skewed towards offense and I don't have a problem with that. However, it has not always been who scores the most. And that is what I am challenging with the Luka narrative.

If Luka wins the MVP this year then we need to just rename it to the Offensive Player of the Year award and live into it as an award that solely looks at raw offensive output.

@HPbasketball 1. Agreed. That statement was more general and not a counter argument to you specifically. 2. And luckily this is what stats like plus/minus and WS partially looks at. Again not perfect but should be a part of the conversation more than just minutes played. IMO.

1. I didn't complain about Bam so you're asking the wrong person 2. It's a fair question of "If you don't NEED to play that many minutes that shouldn't be held against you" but it does speak to the question of WHY your team wins because if you don't play AS much and the team still kills the other one, were you the reason?
Heimer@heimer

@HPbasketball I just want to clarify this minutes argument. In order to be eligible for the MVP, Wemby (and Shai to an extent) need to keep playing in blowout wins to add to their raw stats? This is exactly what Bam did. So when is it acceptable and not acceptable?

@OTCSucio I'm not shocked. I just want to keep challenging the narrative. And I would argue the idea that it has always been this. Nash was a sub 20ppg scorer for his MVPs. And I'm ok with it being weighed more to offensive production but it can't just be a duplicate of the scoring title

Why are yall so surprised? I mean that’s all it has ever been. It’s like the nfl. MVP is just a QB award. This has been the case now for years. Why act surprised? Go become reporter or broadcaster and earn a vote so yall can make a change then 🤷🏽‍♂️

GG Jackson said he asked Ja Morant how to dunk on Victor Wembanyama at halftime. Ja's response: "You from South Carolina, just go do him." 😭😭 On Wemby repaying the favor: "I only jumped because I figured if I was to get the block, that would've been crazy" Full answer ⬇️

I don't disagree with this. Wemby's case is his transformational presence across bothy sides of the floor. But I don't know if that makes up for the difference with more minutes, more games, 30 points a night insane consistency and efficiency and a guy who beats the opponent by the most of anyone when he's on the floor.
Bake@zachlbaker

@HPbasketball Luka has went off lately, but it’s a full season award the difference in wins between OKC and LA are a good bit. Shai has been going ballistic the entire season. I don’t think March basketball should change everything because nobody was saying Wemby or Luka a month ago.
